As my first delve into timplate I bought a Marx commodore vanderbuilt and cars about a year ago.  I have run it a few time but it was kinda balky.  At this point I realized that one of the pickup shows was missing and frankly the other show is kinda beat up.  Is there a way to economically change this to a roller pickup arrangement?  Looking forward to your collective expertise.

Marx used pick up rollers on the later passenger cars, but the loco's all kept the slider. Yours is pre war type with the 2 short shoes. Being as the fixed center copper piece is broke, I'd recommend replacing it with a post war long one piece unit. It is a direct fit, but you do have to remove the drivers to loosen the motor plates enough to get the fiber plate out. Grossman sells replacement short shoes, but you would need to repair the broken end of the fixed center piece. Not a tough job though.

Steve, i put this in the other post of the same topic, but is the Grossman part #391 that is just described with no picture as "Prewar Pickup Shoe" what they could use?  doesn't it look like all the rest of the pickup is intact?  that part just floats anyway.

opps... never mind... i should have looked at one first to see that a big chunk is missing.

Papa Steve,

Thanks for the input.  I'll do some research on finding the part you described.  I am rather leery of trying to remove drivers though...  I've never attempted that type of repair before and don't really have any tools to do so.  I had mentioned rollers because I was think maybe I could add them to the bottom of the frame without having to disassemble the engine.

If you are not comfortable doing it, you can send it to me and I'll will fix it for you. You just cover the postage costs.
