I only have a few MTH locomotives that smoke, and have used the smoke fluid that comes with the locomotives, as well as a couple scents I've purchased from both MTH and Mega Steam.

Coal Fired Steamer from Mega Steam is probably my favorite in terms of how much smoke it produces. The scent is good as well.

I've also tried Wood Burning smoke from MTH, I don't think it has quite the volume of smoke, but I do like the scent.

I've also tried the coffee scent from MTH, After a while the scent gets a bit overpowering. Although, I just realized the other day it smells exactly the same as the coffee scented "country fixins" smelly stuff and candle my wife has sitting on our kitchen table.

Some of the megasteam scents are stronger than others. I personally prefer the "Nada" scent, just because I dont like the smell that lingers afterwards. Around the holidays though, some of the smoke scents are fairly pleasant. Biggest difference I've noticed between MTH and megasteam fluid is that a fill of megasteam lasts longer. The volume of smoke falls off a bit faster with MTH fluid.

Once I get done with the big bottle of protosmoke I bought (I stupidly bought the big bottle shaped like a train), I'm switching to megasteam.

I switched over to megasteam 3 or 4 years ago and have not looked back. Use it in everything and it works well. Wick life has not been an issue. When one needs new wicking I usually put in tiki torch wick. So far so good.

Some of my favorite sents are grandpas pipe, original cedar, orange, and diesel.

Coal fired steamer smells a little noxious to me, but that's just me.

Judging by posts on this Forum, changing the wick is necessary only if a smoke unit has run "dry" or received too much juice. Chris Lonero posted that he changed wicks to get rid of a scorched scent from factory smoke fluid, so that is another factor.

Sooner or later smoke unit wicking will need to be changed depending on how often you use them. The wicking still becomes hard over time, and still becomes burned to a degree even with enough fluid. When your loco "doesn't smoke like it used to",its probably time.

Best in terms of what? Smoke volume? Smell? Lasting longer?

Any brand fluid in any brand engine. I find Lionel premium fluid is the best right now. My opinion.

Tell me about it the wife made me move the train room up stairs because of tiny lionel puffer units  at least now I can get the big leauge mth units  I bet you your not alone I am sure others will chime in too I have seen even better improvements when you replace the wicking with tiki torch wicks it is only 2.00 and you get pretty much all you will need for a few years depending on how many units you have to change out  Maybe that will make your wife smell it more pleasantly.

Not all women dislike train smoke. I love it, and only consider the atmosphere in my train room to be correct when one can hardly see from one end to the other, and everything smells of hickory wood. (My favourite Mega-Steam scent.) But then again, I am an old bat from the days of steam, and one of my earliest memories is of my mother holding me over the edge of a bridge as the trains passed underneath.

That's a memory I can relate to as well.  When I was a boy, I would lean over the wall on the Wick Ave. bridge in downtown Youngstown and get a face full of smoke from trains running on the Erie tracks below.
