Happy hump day to you! This was a busy weekend railroad-wise for me, so let's get the Midweek going...
I took a chartered bus trip to SMS Rail Services in New Jersey on Friday. They own a little yard near their shop. It is a busy railroad located on a portion of the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines. This portion has been developed into the Pureland Industrial Park, and SMS is the switching road.
We had a tour of their shop building. A rather new structure built entirely around their old shop building. A Reading caboose is being rebuilt at the moment.
They have developed a reputation of being the operators of the largest fleet of Baldwin Lima Hamilton diesels. This former Erie Mining Co. unit is being rebuilt.
Another is nearly ready to leave the shop. Now, it's time to explore the yard.
Automobile styling in the late 30s was reflected in diesel designs of the same time, as we can see in this model from 1937.
The "Big Boy" of Baldwins is this AS-616 which the railroad bought from the Trona Railway about a decade ago.
The working unit is this PRR S12. It came through while we were taking photos.
It also moved one of these fuel tankers alongside another S12, from the Baltimore and Ohio. What more could you want?
Well, how about a steam locomotive?
A few years ago, the railroad brought New Hope & Ivyland's no. 9 out of the dead line so she could be restored and used alongside her Baldwin relations.
Final reassembly is to take place in a few months, and perhaps by this time next year, Number 9's movement in the yard will be old hat. By the way, this all-Baldwin road is allowing this US Army ALCO in the fold. So she is extra special.
Now I hand the thread over to you. I really enjoy seeing rail operations from all over. Even if you live outside of the US, we would like to see what has rolled your way in the recent past. Talk to you next Wednesday!
