Happy April, everyone.  In the past weekend, we have celebrated Easter, the beginning of Passover, the 42nd anniversary of Contail beginning, and April Fools Day. I hope everyone celebrated in an appropriate fashion ... especially the April Fools part.

Anyway, I did get a few shots trackside in Scranton this past week.  Here we go:

On Friday, I caught the Delaware Lackawanna RR running on what is now called the Strawberry Hill  connector. In the steam years, the Delaware lackawanna and Western RR called it the Diamond Branch, leading to the Diamond Breaker, which is a col processing plant about 6 blocks away.  RS32 no 211 was leading 3 RS3s on the line, which is now on the south side of the Scranton bus station.

A bit of brake smoke emits from one of the RS3s, which was once a Delaware & Hudson unit numbered 4118.

The Delaware-Lackawanna is so busy these days that they need to switch out cars wherever they can.  On Friday, the only place left was the area where the tracks cross Lackawanna Ave at the juncture of the bus station, the Mall at Steamtown and a PA state office building.  Not only was it vehicle traffic, but people coming out of work at the same time.  This switching lasted for about 20 minutes.

Here is a view of how it sort of upset people in the back and forth moves over this busy street.

And a cool angle on the leader of this pack: no. 211.  I think this was built for New York Central, and it came to Scranton over a decade ago from the Tishomingo Railroad in Mississippi.

That is what I have to offer this week.  What did you capture trackside lately?  Now that the weather is getting milder, you might feel the need to head out with your camera more often .  If you do, share what you find with us.

For April Fools' Day my wife and I usually pull pranks on each other.  (Like the time I replaced the contents of her roll-on deodorant with Elmer's glue. )  This year we ganged up on my oldest son and told him he was going to have a baby sister!  Never mind my wife is 59 years old.  His girlfriend wasn't buying it though.

Anyway, I have a few photos.  Winter has returned!  We got another 5 inches of snow and the overnight temp dropped to +6.  Spring is on hold for another week or two.  I did manage to get a few shots along the BNSF Marshall sub:

1. N/B manifest train near Florence, MN.  I caught it just as the sun was going down.

2.S/B grain train (empty), near Lynd MN heading for the Florence wye to interchange with the RCPE.  My favorite shot of the week.

3. S/B manifest near Ruthton, MN.  I set up four small lights, being careful to walk around what looked like deep snow in the ditch.  This time of year the snow can be crusted over and if you walk out on it, it can give way and suddenly you're in waist deep snow.  I don't trust ditch snow.  It was about 15 degrees and the wind had picked up, so I waited in my car.  I heard the train coming so I dashed out and ran straight across the part of the ditch I had been avoiding.  I felt it give way and instantly found myself in icy water over my knees!  I let out a shriek, or maybe it was a potty word.  Snow had collected on a thin layer of ice, hiding the water underneath.  This has happened to me before.  Train came, I got the shot, and quickly packed up my stuff as my pants were freezing to my legs.  I sat on a plastic bag so my car seat wouldn't get wet.  It was a miserable hour and half ride home.
