Halfway through the week, and halfway to Christmas! I know for some of us, the last snow has just disappeared, while others are preparing for the first snow coming any day now.  But for my part of Pennsylvania, the beginning of summer is when ridership aboard the trains starts kicking in.   (The upper photo was taken Christmas eve, 2009)

This past Sunday, both the Electric City Trolley (going to the RailRiders AAA Baseball game) and the Steamtown excursion to Moscow were full.  Both waiting here for the last guests to board.

There is some re-construction on the boarding platform that is nearing completion.

In Moscow, PA, I was able to catch the Nickel Plate Geep passing the freight depot before re-coupling with the coaches.

Almost there.  Most people gather where the coupling takes place.

Where have the rails taken you and your camera lately?  The good thing about trains is that they are typically photogenic, and don't hide from view.  If you have safe access to the tracks, and took some photos worth sharing, please post here.  Have a great week!

Like the Nickel Plate geep, good pics.  Here are some photos from the last few weeks in the Midwest.  A older Dash8 with a GP sitting on the Rock Island.  Then a winter photo of my son this last January along the Platte river, it was like 2 degrees that day but still fun to watch the trains zip by at 50-60 mph.  The last one is of our favorite engines, SD70MACs with the state capitol in the background.    Nick

Reaching back, already over twenty years, October 6 1993.

A Gateway Western train is detouring over the NS Mexico, MO-St. Louis  line due to dues to the massive flooding in 1993. (knocked out part of the approach to their  Missouri River Bridge at Glascow, MO)

Here ATSF 5380 leads the eastbound train on the approach to the NS, (former Wabash) bridge over the Missouri River at St. Charles, MO October 6, 1993. The consist includes the lone unit painted for the Gateway Eastern as well as a pair if GWWR geeps.

Last Friday, the Reading and Northern took 425 and her new valves out for a test run. She took a 20 car coal hopper train (complete with little red caboose) from Tamaqua to North Reading Yard.

Then she came home with just the caboose.

Were those 20 hoppers LOADED?  The only YouTube video I saw posted, had absolutely NO EXHAUST sound, which seemed odd to me. Maybe she was going down grade?

Yes, the run from Tamaqua to North Reading Yard is mostly downhill, and I have seen overhead shots of the train, and you can see the coal. I know it snuck up on me once, and on other people too. I did see a video of her down at North Reading Yard making noise (I heard a rumor that she stalled, but I don't know that for a fact).

From the top of the Island Princess.

The GPs on the left are switching the yard & unloading the rail barge.  The Big Macs in the middle just brought in the freight from Anchorage.  They are now hooked to the out going freight & will leave for Anchorage when all the passenger trains are done.  The GPs will soon put the railcars on the barge that the Big Macs brought down. The Big Mac on the right just brought in the DEX - 7 passenger car loads for the Island Princess.  2 more passenger trains to come in & then all 3 leave - then the out going freight can build his train.  Several tracks to join up to make a mile + long train to Anchorage.

Last Friday I got a chance to ride the Utah Transit authority FrontRunner commuter train from Ogden to Murray Central Station near Salt Lake City. Here's a few shots I took from the train. The cab control car has a front seat on the fireman's side that gives a great view!

1. A UP freight seen as we were leaving Ogden.

2. A meet with a northbound Train.

3. FrontRunner locomotive and yards, State Capitol in background.

4. The cab-control car, at Murray Central.

5. Train leaving Murray Central.
