Have installed Cab 3 and using app is ok on iphone. However I think I prefer a larger screen and thinking of getting a refurbished mini ipad to be main control device. Any suggestions on version of mini ipad. I am not going to spring for the newest and greatest as it is singular use is just for train control.

Do a google search of refurbished ipad , or refurbished ipad mini if you only want to look at the mini. Connections and Memory size affect price, as does what generation the ipad is. You only need wifi connection ability. If you are only going to use for trains, you don't need a large memory. I have a refrubished ipad 9th generation and it works fine. Note: some sites that sell refurbished ipads tell you exactly what they do during refurbishment.
The problem that I can't tell you is what generation the ipad has to be, or maybe better stated, what iOS level is minimum for Cab3 app. Hopefully someone can add this information, or maybe edit the title of your original post it include asking iOS minimum level requirement.
Thanks MED.
I have searched and can find lots of refurbished or older ipad minis.
Guess what I trying to determine is the minimum IOS version required to operate and ensure upgrade ability of device.
I have two iPads but both are stuck on 10.5 IOS and supposedly not upgradable as message popped that MTH app would not work.
Time to contact Lionel - suggest you do a search - members for @Dave Olson as his profile contains an email address. Email Dave and ask what is the minimum iOS level required for Cab3 app.
I was able to install Cab3 app on old ipad that has a version of iOS 13, but Lionel wireless camera app wouldn't install saying iOS had to be 15.0 or higher. I don't have a Base3, so couldn't test.
I looked on this Lionel web page, but didn't see a minimum iOS requirement.

Found in this apple store webpage that Cab3 has iOS 9.0 as the minimum level. Would explain why I could install on my iOS level 13 ipad.
App would not install on IOS version 10.1.
I bought an iPad mini 4 off of amazon refurbished that can get to ios 15 I believe which should be more than enough for the Cab3 app for a while.
Also, search Sean's Train Depot videos, he just did one on getting an ipad mini for the Cab3 / MTH WiFi apps.
One downside of the ipad is that Lionel hasn't optimized the app for that screen size, so it doesn't take full advantage of the screen. Yes it is a bigger layout and easier to use and see, just not full screen. I hope Lionel updates that in the future.
