Modeling a 96 Foot Long Type FM Heavy Duty 12-axle flatcar in O scale (three rail)
This O scale model is a 12-axle 96 scale foot long flatcar with an extra heavy duty under frame. It is similar to the KRL 304 flatcar. However the platform length on the model was increased to 17-1/2 inches (70 scale feet). Overall length of the model is 24 inches. The model uses 4 pair of RailKing 3-axle style trucks.
Note: Brake draft gear has been relocated from the end of the car to the underside of the car.
A special feature is the use of articulated truck bolsters which allow the car to operate on small radius curves. Because each truck is allowed to shift side to side the car can operate more smoothly through turnouts and yards. The model also features a low center of gravity for additional stability.
Note: The KRL 304 is a 12-axle flatcar that was originally owned by Westinghouse (road number WECX 304). It uses 4 pair of Buckeye style 3-axle trucks. The overall car length is 70 feet 7 inches. Capacity is 740,000 pounds.
