Folks, I just completed the DCC conversion of a SUNSET Camelback 0-8-8-0 and the complete renovation of a small GEM 0-6-0.
The SUNSET model is now equipped with a DCC decoder from Digitrax DH465. All the bulbs have been replaced with Yellow Glow LEDs, for longevity and to decrease the load on the decoder. I may have to blacken that coupler in the front or replace it with a Kadee.
The GEM was purchased without a tender and in its brass original outfit. Instead of the typical sloped tender seen on most of these models, I decided to go with a more square tender as seen on the READING B-8a class starting in the 1390's numbers. This one is 1398 and is based on a picture taken from the Steam Engine Encyclopedia. The DCC decoder is an NCE D13-SR. The engine was completely taken apart, re-motored with a small PITTMAN motor and painted using Scalecoat engine black. Soft glow LEDs were used front and back. The tender is an old KTM tender (Previously PRR), with relocated trucks (to reduce the distance between them) and a shell built with an old Rivarossi 0-8-0 kit. Real crushed coal and wooden steps complete the model.
