I am repairing a Lionel FEF 6-11131. I purchased this engine knowing the motor control board 691-DCDS-104 was bad. I also found and replaced a bad voltage regulator (full line voltage out to the smoke unit) and the smoke unit heating element (was toast (actually had a fire)). This engine came with a 6 ohm resistor which I replaced with an 8 ohm resistor. While I was at it, I enlarge the intake air hole in the smoke unit.
After a factory reset, the engine worked properly.
I then replaced the shell and found the emergency stop light not working. On this engine, the front red light flashes when the emergency stop is pressed. (AUX1, #5).
I found a bad LED. Not sure this was the original bulb. Lionel parts show this light is not available. I am ready to install a new red LED, but I started to 2nd guess myself as I was thinking about what would cause the LED to fail (high voltage???)
So, to the heart of the post -
What voltage is supplied to the red emergency light when active? Is it designed for an LED bulb? Did someone else install an incorrect bulb? Etc.
Can someone confirm that the output to this bulb is for an LED? This light is powered by pin 3 of the 10 pin connector on the side of the DCDS board. The pin has the designation of "CAB" written on the board.
I know that the mother board connection for the front headlight is a half wave DC for these engines. I want to be sure the DCDS is designed for a LED. And if not, I can add the diode and resistor, etc.
Thanks for your help.
