I have a complete set of Golden Gate Depot Lehigh Valley heavyweight passenger cars that I'm wanting to convert to Kadee Couplers because of issues I'm having with the tinplate couplers.

My plan is to mount Kadee #805 coupler assemblies that I ordered from my local hobby shop.  Does GGD provide holes in their car frames to mount the Kadee Gear Boxes, or do I need to drill and tap new holes into the frame?  What size screw should I use to mount the gear box?

There are no mounting holes. 1. unscrew and remove the original coupler tang. 2. You have to make a shim out of plastic sheet or plywood to fit flush with the car body overhang so you have a flat mounting surface for the 805 boxes and the right coupler height. 3. Center and drill your holes and screw down.

I glue the shims to the frame floor.

If these are like the PULLMAN heavyweights. There are mounting holes in place. I used 2 56 threaded screws. They should form there own holes. Just slowly thread them in. As far as length. I'm not sure. If you space them at the proper height. You will need a fairly thick shim. Using the O Scale standard height is a good idea. If this is a consist that won't interchange with other cars you don't have to purchase the height gauge just to try it out. Just mount them to the vestibule.llimage

Dave,

Looking at the bottom of my vestibule, it looks exactly the same as the one in the picture above.  Yes there are mounting holes. so that should make this job a little easier.  I'm not too concerned about adjusting the coupler to the O scale standard height.  These cars will couple to my Weaver Black Diamond Pacific which has a tinplate coupler, so I need to make sure they are at the correct height  to do that.  From running trains on a friends layout, I learned it is possible to connect cars with Kadees to tinplate couplers, so hopefully this wont be an issue in my case.

BTW, did you add any shims to the example in the above pic?

Yes. Weaver at one time sold an adaptor to truck mount a Kadee. Similar to what Atlas was doing with their Adjustacouplers.  I bought some to try out on my Troop  Sleepers. Didn't work well and ended up cutting off the bracket and using the real thick mount as a shim. Worked well for this application as you needed a pretty thick one. If you have an recent MTH cars. They come with shims for doing their cars. Should be good to get you close. If your not switching out cars. You only need to shim your head end car to meet in the middle of the tenders coupler. A good thick piece of basswood between the mounting screws can work in a pinch.
