MTH 2.4 Volt Batteries

Tried Traintek LLC for the AAA niMH 2.4 battery, they are out of stock.

Good idea to replace them after that long. Probably wouldn't hurt to charge them a little while before using just to be on the safe side.

I am reasonably sure the 2005 date was when they were first released and they have replenished the stock many times since then. My LHS has been out of these and had to re-order many times. I would say the chances of getting one from 2005 are pretty slim.

2005 is when they were first issued.  They are still being produced.  Call Midge at MTH Parts for the AAA.

Bg-4000004 is aaa (I am out of those right now).   I would charge them, but you can put them in and test engine.  3V won't we hurt by it.  Or plug a 6V bulb in the battery.  If it stays lit, it is probably ok, and will charge with use.  G

The blue AA NiCad batteries were still being shipped with the last of the PS/2 upgrade kits, so they can't all be from 2005.

Since I don't need one ASAP, I think I will wait till April York to pick up a Bg-4000004 battery.

MTH shipping costs for the battery are very unreasonable.

do you have any batteries plus stores near you? They may have the battery pack or sometimes they can make a new one in house. Only battery packs they cannot do are factory sealed  for cordless drill/drivers. I use this vendor a lot.

Why not go with the BCR2? Model Train Stuff sells them for $17.99 and they have a 5% off coupon good thru the 3rd.  You can probably buy a few with there $6.95 shipping charge. In the long run you'll save on the batteries.

Hi All,

Just discovered that my MTH Amtrak F59PH with PS 2.0 has one of these batteries which is likely dead. I want to change it out with a new BCR-2 from J&W Electronics but am not sure how to disconnect the wires from the tight connector, a small rectangular box. Please advise on best way to disconnect! Thanks!

Small flat screw driver and you can pry connector up some.  Then remove. G

GGG, when prying the plug apart, if you accidentally short the two prongs in the plug together, could any damage occur to the board? The thought often crossed my mind when I pry these plugs apart. 

You should be able to get them apart without shorting them, but I doubt shorting them briefly would damage the board, the batteries might not like it.
