MTH 2014 VOL 2 CATALOG UP ON THE WEBSITE

So far I will PO the NYC Niagara, NYC Sharknose and Pennsy E-8.

Nothing new -- ie, nothing that hasn't been previously announced or even shown -- in the European line. 

MTH doesn't even consider the European 0 market important enough to correct the misleading [ at best ] catalogue mistakes they make year after year.

Mike Wolf was talking about the BR-44 German Steam Engine and said he had hired a man who was a designer at Marklin for 30 years and said he had designed the whole Engine and that MTH had made the gap between the Engine and Tender especially short..

Most of the Railking engines (I only buy Railking) I either already have or have had. The RS1s are nice and I thought the Golden Spike sets were kinda neat but there really isn't anything I can't live without. 

Well I can say that my wallet is safe but I like the NS AS616. I'm kinda suprised that MTH didn't jump on doing the new Amtrak sprinters since they have the Taurus ES-64.

Based on what I'm seen Lionel has the better selection so far.

Some great freight cars in Premier I'll have to pick up.

The Niagara is nice, but my layout is O54 and not O72....too bad....

The Premier jade green  New York Central E8's are cool.  The blue N&W E8"s are cool too.....did the N&W have engines like these?

The RailKing Mohawks, NYC and NYO&W look nice.

More for me here than in the Lionel catalog.

I have come full circle, the items in the first MTH catalog when I got back into trains are shown again in 2014 Vol 2., guess it is time to move along as there is nothing to see here.

This is depressing as I'm an MTH fan and have been very loyal with my motive power, over 30 engines. Without something more than updated PS boards, looks like TMCC will need to be installed and Lionel / 3rd Rail motive power will be the future, as MTH seems to be clearly stuck in the past.

In my opinion this catalog illustrates just how much the O gauge market has in fact slowed down. When Andy Edelman told me that O gauge was shrinking at a train show a couple years ago I was surprised. I suppose this catalog shows it.

I like PS3 and all, but I'm a little surprised that MTH is basically banking on the fact that people will want the same engines just to get PS3. Unless I'm mistaken there isn't even any new rolling stock. I just glanced at the catalog so I'm sure I could have missed something.

There are some decent offerings if you missed them the first time or if you want to roll the dice and see if they will make a scale wheel version of a model you want. I just can't help notice that there is really nothing new.

I don't think it is a coincidence that there are newly tooled models in HO, but not in O. I really can't blame them either. If I were in their shoes I would probably be doing the same.

They apparently are out of tune with consumers, they need to follow Athearn's lead and put up a few polls asking people what they would like to see.

certainly there NYC E-8s in jade green will draw a lot of interest.  (Maybe these would look good next to my K-Lines!  Plus there's a B unit!)

Norfolk & Western E-8s  (I don't recall ever seeing these in this scheme.  Will have to go searching the Internet for a real-life picture!)

The Soo Line F-3 ABAs look nice.  Wondering what the "real" colors will look like!

Mike.....I'm waiting for an answer from Gilly if the N&W had such engines. I'll let you know.

A big yawn here. I see a couple of Premier freight cars I might order, and the Milwaukee Road AS-616 is tempting, but: a) it's a diesel, and b) I already have one painted for B&LE that just needs a new herald to become Milwaukee Road. Bottom line, there's really nothing new - at least on the U.S.side.

On the European side, it's good to see a bit more information on the German and French steam locomotives. I might just have to go for the BR 44 2-10-0, but when are they going to come up with some matching freight cars? They only offer two steam era cars, and they are all lettered for SBB-CFF. Maybe by the time they actually get the steam freight engines in production they will have some German and French cars to go with them. I will have to add the Bierbrauerei Falken reefer to the consist for my Croc, and maybe another tanker or two to go behind the Traxx, but that is about it for this catalog.

Thanks Peter.   I'm very curious!  I love my N&W Heritage ES44AC, and based on the looks of that, I'm betting that a set of E-8s in that scheme would look pretty sharp!

I love to see the new catalogs but again, nothing that interests me. I hope there are things that others like.

Pass here too. I have many MTH engines already and now it is time to check out Lionel who have had a lot more exciting Catalog for me this year.....

Nevertheless, I applaud MTH for their 3-2R, DCC and scale wheels offerings...

I must be looking at the wrong catalog...I'm a little over 2k right now and the tinplate catalog is no where to be found. I'm at $140 on the Lionel side.

I don't think the 2014 tinplate is up yet.

Notch 6 has a good interview with MTH`s Andy Edleman on the new Catalogs, what it takes to get product to market and some news about S Gauge and Tinplate..

Nothing excites me. I'm still waiting for my PS3 Cab Forward to be shipped.

I'll order the UP "Flag" aux water tender. I've wanted one for a long time and have even planned to scratch build one. Now I won't have too.  Really excited to see it in the catalog!  Will look great behind my Lionel 844.

May get a UP RPO passenger car I missed the first time. 

Not complaining about MTH's catalog.  Nice to get some reissues I missed the first time. 

Thankfully there wasn't any new UP steamers this year!

Premier thoughts,

Very, very disappointing IMO. Another 844, Reading T1, blue comet, REALLY!  How many UP and Pennsy passenger cars can they make.

Even if they can't tool up something new how about upgrading what they have to make them more prototypical. 

Well, no GE44 ton, the reissue of the NYO&W Mountaineer (Mohawk) is as incorrect as it was the first time I passed on it, but since Weaver decided not to make it, I'll think about it this time. The Erie boxcar However, looks real good.

Looks like nothing for M&StL from Lionel or MTH this year. 

Yes... That's more like it.  For all the complaining thus far that this catalog is a dud (which it's not ), there are plenty of ways to spend $$$ easily in this hobby -- almost too easy, as a matter of fact.  It's never been cheap... that's for sure.

In general this is a very tough audience to please.  And while the MTH catalogs may need a new look-and-feel (perhaps they've gone a few too many catalogs with the same style graphics), there's still a nice variety of product for those with money burning a hole in their pockets.  

At least MTH published the catalog when they said they would.  Lionel played this forum like a complete orchestra with all the delays/slips in an effort to capitalize on the BTO buzz.

Now... If MTH would unveil their new Tinplate catalog (which I thought was due out today as well), it'll be interesting to see where the real damage occurs!!!

When I asked on FB yesterday if the tinplate catalog would be online today, the response I got was "time will tell"...I'm not holding my breath.

I kind of like the Baldwin AS-616 in Norfolk Southern. It's nice to see something besides an RKS GP7/9 every once in a while.
