Would anyone know if the traditional MTH 385E has a mechanical whistle? Do you have one? If so, how do you like it.

Mine has a traditional style air whistle. I cannot say for sure that they all do, as there have been several iterations. I have one of the earliest versions that came in a brown cardboard box. I like it; it looks great and runs just fine. I have not run it very much. The whistle is anemic, as is generally the case with the MTH air whistle.
If it does not one could install a new truck and air whistle.
Does the Brown Box version have a chugger like the late version of the original?

I don't think so. It's packed away right now, but I don't recall one being there and I am not aware that MTH ever made a chugger. I used to have a restored 392E with a chugger, so I am familiar with it, but I've never seen a chugger on any MTH repro locomotive.
