Two of my MTH std.gauge engines are having similar prolems.
The new 9e refuses to budge but makes a sound as if its getting ready to go. This is after I changed the regular 9v with a BCR. No change. Same sound with bell ringing but no motion.
The new IVES 3243 had a 2.3 volt Nicad battery which i replaced with a 3v BCR. After charging for a minute or so, it flew aound the track four or five loops. But when stopped to reverse direction it sounded the horn on its own, conductor voices came on their own and it shut off . Next attempt ot goes a few inches and stops and shuts off.
Any suggestions including how to rest these engines, if thats the issue would be great.
