MTH Archives Auction Announcement

Will the winner of these items get a certificate verifying that the item came out of the MTH Archives?

Bids in for Round 1 and chuckle at how the showroom layout is buried down in the list . And doing the layout math 256 sq ft times 350.per foot say 90,000 plus the move to ... and you have their layout.Lottery time!!!

Yes, there will be certificates provided with each item.

Is there a ballpark number on shipping costs ?  If it doubles the cost of an item then it was no bargain. Thanks for any information. 

Does anyone happen to know what L&T means on certain listings? It seems to only appear on steam engines, but not all.

This is like a nightmare. The reality is setting in that MTH is going out of business. Very sad.

If you click on any item in the preview and then click on "Terms" it discusses the premium.

The few items I checked all describe15% buyers premium, and then 6% PA tax on the total (so add 15% premium, then add 6% to that total for full price with tax).  And don't forget shipping if you don't want to pick up in person!  If I recall correctly, that too is taxable under PA sales tax law.

They have a sorry website. I have been trying to register and it just locks up the browser.

I think it is a lot more than they normally handle. Give them a chance though. They are good people who try to take care of their customers. 

I had no problems signing on and bidding.

Do you have to pay PA tax if you are out of state?

I also had no issue registering and signing on.  Website works fine for me.

I did have one question for MTH.  Are all the engines fully functional?  is it possible that the engineering and promotional samples do not run?

As for the CF site, it is slow, but it functions well with a little patience.  

I don’t see Cabin Fever auctions in the banner.  They are getting a lot of free advertising if they are not a sponsor.

Keith and everyone else.  I was not going to respond to this but just so you know, I had a very interesting conversation with the owner of the auction house.  Without going into detail, it was unproductive and made clear that the investment in our magazine/forum was not going to happen.  I am letting this run because of MTH and not because of the auction house.  UPDATE:  9-8-20.  Cabin Fever Auctions has decided to come aboard as a sponsor of the forum!  You will be seeing their banner and ads soon!

Assume they don't run. Many were used as parts donors. Some may run but I don't see anything that confirms their condition one way or the other.

Seems to me questions would be better off directed at the Auction House or MTH directly.  I have seldom seen MTH respond here, even on their own section of the forum.   

It appears to me MTH is just emptying the junk out of the warehouse.  Buyer beware!

I viewed the site and attempted to register.  What stopped me, is it said they had to perform a "credit check" to make sure I could cover the $1 deposit or minimum bid.  Does anyone know if this is really true?  I wasn't about to let someone do a hard pull on my credit in Fair Isaac to see if I'm good for $1.  I'm pretty guarded with my credit history.  Definitely NOT putting my SSN (Tax ID) on someone's web site, with all the hacking, etc., it just doesn't seem prudent.

Frankly I doubt I will bid in this round of the auction.  Where are all of the tools and dies, spare parts lots, etc?

And to address the question about whether the items are fully functional, I agree with Pete- I doubt it!  They may be missing parts, etc.  If you want a piece of MTH history for its own sake, fine.  Otherwise, Caveat Emptor!

You are absolutely correct.  Folks with specific questions should be contacting MTH or the auction house.  Questions here will not be answered directly from the auction house because they are not members/sponsors of the forum so best to give them or MTH a call.  UPDATE:  Cabin Fever Auctions is now going to be an advertiser/sponsor in the magazine and forum very soon so you may be getting details answered directly here on the forum.

Conversely I saw several things I haven't been able to find elsewhere.   Talk about a last chance opportunity!  

I suspect parts lots a artwork will come in later auction rounds.   I would like to see CF as a forum sponsor. 

These items were pulled off of shelves and loaded up, the MTH service dept is already short handed so I find it hard to believe they would test every item to see if it is complete. Don’t get me wrong, I have a ton of MTH stuff that I love dearly but I would consider these auction items nice display pieces and if they function then it would be a bonus.  Will I be bidding ?  Probably so, however considering the purchase is a gamble, and the shipping price is even a bigger gamble I will bid accordingly 

I marked about 5 items that I might bid on later.  No definite-haves.  Chances are good that the bidding will go beyond what I would be willing to pay with the buyer's premium and unknown shipping cost.

If you're into Standard Gauge it appears there are quite a few nice pieces available.  

It also appears that if you buy the showroom layout you get 2 Z-4000's with it.  The current bid is $220.  Go there with a chainsaw, cut it up and throw it in the back of your pickup, then keep the Z-4000's!

I can not see bidding on anything not having any idea of shipping and handling costs or how well the items will be handled by the auction house and shipper.

I keep that in mind and have only bid on rolling stock.  As someone said you should assume that there are issues with the engines.  I've also kept my bidding with the buyer's premium and potential shipping cost in mind.

Agree. Looked through it for a friend and the one item he liked, a Premier CB&Q F3 A-B pair, has a hole in the nose!

Where's he gonna get a replacement cab? 😄 

Hopefully funds raised will go towards the employees severance.
