MTH BL-2 adding smoke fluid

I just got my R.I. BL2 from MTH over Christmas, and was very unhappy about adding smoke fluid to the engine. The area where the smoke comes out has two narrow slits, and you cannot add fluid without it seeping all over the top of the area around the slits. I do not like fluid residue on my engine bodies, and am very disappointed in this design. Anybody out there have a solution...besides not operating the smoke unit! ??
