I'm considering taking a PS1 diesel and putting ERR in it. Engine is 20-2224-1. What is involved? Would like to keep the smoke effect, operating couplers. If possible, would like to convert the lighting to LEDs and get flashing ditch lights and maybe ground lights too.

It's possible, but the flashing ditch lights are a bit more problematic as the one ERR product that made that possible isn't made anymore. On my large list of neat projects to do is a diesel enhancement module that will combine several features.
LED lighting isn't any problem, and smoke is pretty easy to solve, the PS/1 smoke unit can be connected directly to the TMCC smoke output. Sound is a piece of cake obviously.
I have a little module I have made that allows you to do stuff like Rule-17 lighting, two-level smoke, and automatic cab light control. The board simply monitors the motor voltage to see when the locomotives is moving, and then closes the relay. You can do a lot of stuff with that simple bit of information.
I used my last one, so you have to make do with the 3D representations of what it looks like. With this board, you could have the ditch lights come on when moving, but I currently don't have an option to flash them.

Thanks. A pet peeve for me is eastern ditch lights not flashing. Guess I'll just have to get over it. What about the couplers? Can I just hook them up or do I need to do anything? With the smoke, just hook it up and done?
Gee John, that "cab lighting" effect would be cool. Could that feature also be used for Ground lights as well?

I like the flashing ditch lights as well, I'd like to come up with something to add that back in. Couplers are no problem, the PS/1 couplers are compatible with Lionel voltages, just use the ones that are there. Smoke ditto.

Yep, the only thing is the ground lights should really stay on until about 10 scale-MPH. I do that for steam with my Chuff-Generator, but I don't have anything for diesel yet. I'd like to combine the ability to flash the ditch lights, operate the ground lights, Rule-17 lighting, automatic cab light control, and the dual-level smoke into one module.
Too many projects, too little time.
Cool. Thanks!
Big deal, smoke and couplers are free with the ERR package, you don't need anything special to drive them.
Which discontinued ERR board had the flashing ditch lights? IMO, that's a bad one to discontinue, as are the ones you liked so well. I had not gotten around to trying to learn anything about the ERR boards and then they were all gone...
You need an assistant! Or a pre-trained electronics engineering apprentice.
You missed my last year's topic.
Adding ditch lights to TMCC Locomotives using the ERR Sound Converter
This is how I added ditch lights to a few upgrades, that door has closed now.
I sort of remember seeing that earlier, but I just didn't completely understand what it was about at the time. This thread has helped a bit, but as you say, too late now I guess. It'll be good to know if the sound converter is ever brought back to life.
I do find it amazing as to how some of you guys keep track of all this stuff. I think I need to upgrade my memory and add more of it!
Hmm... add more memory, that will be interesting. Are you going to cut a trapdoor right in the middle of your head?
Still a few minor details to work out for the memory upgrade, installation and placement are just a couple of them.
Only thing I'm sure of, the current memory isn't what it used to be, it's slowed way down and doesn't hold near as much data as it used to! I think some of the data has also been corrupted...
