I'm thinking of buying an MTH 20-89010 premier truck with the operating ETD. How easy is it to put it on a freight car (I'm not the most adept guy with little tools)? Also must the car I put it on be a Premier car or can I use a Railking one? Thanks.

It's easy to put on a Premier freight car, at least all that I've tried. I imagine it would work on a RailKing car, I haven't actually tried it.

Easy peasy. And I don't do much work on these things, so if I can do it, ANYONE can. Attached is the image of one I added to a Lionel caboose. Yeah, I know, a caboose probably shouldn't have one. I'm in it for the fun, not the modeling.

I put one on a RK double stack and it was not easy. The roller assembly makes it almost impossible to put a couple screws back in. Flatcars and boxcars not bad, Premier hoppers are hard to get apart to get at the screw because they are on top of the truck.
I installed the Premier End of Train truck on a RailKing box car with a problem coupler. It involves removing screws for the body and truck, then putting all the screws back in place. You need a place to keep the screws from rolling away.

Can anyone please give step-by-step instructions for putting an end-of-train light on an MTH box car.
Thanks!

Simply change-out the truck, i.e. remove the original truck and replace it with the "end-of-train" truck.
I finally took mine out of the package and just set it on the rails. It is self contained and looks great. I like the lighting effects.
I'm going to try it on my G scale car soon.
All of the screws have to be removed from the floor of the box car to get the body off.
The truck can be unscrewed.
The new truck can be screwed on the floor of the box car.
The body has to be screwed back on the floor.

If we go back to the mid 80s , having a fred on a caboose is not out of order, Railways had to test these things . (emergency brake applications fron the rear , air pressure etc)Easy peasy. I use one on my Lionel ttx and maxistack train. Because the original truck screws go in from the bottom i removed the original truck, put the screw back in and removed the head leaving a pin basically. I just put the headless screw into the eot truck hole and the weight of the car keeps it in place. I can also swap the original truck back in quick and pull a caboose instead when the mood strikes me. Never had any trouble with it this way.
