I have an older MTH Chessie GP38-2 that I want to get running. I got off the shell, but I am having a lot of trouble getting to the battery to swap out. Any recommendations?

Some MTH engines have the battery in the fuel tank.. Much easier to get at but I really don't know about your engine.
Take that plastic fence off, it has two screws. Sometimes I have to loosen the screws that holds the board down to push the battery out as well. When you get it out, immediately discard it, that old white battery can only cause you grief!
One of the sides of fence did not fare well in the operation, but the white battery is gone. I threw in a 9V to test, and everything looks to be working.
It seems like since I have gone through the work of getting to the battery, I should probably replace it with something like the BCR, right? Is there any current opinion on what to use--new battery or BCR?
you can use either one I have used
bcrs and green mth battery and both work well you have to allow time if you use a bcr for the capacitor to charge, maybe 1 minute or so on power up then run as usual.
