I model the Great Northern and have been looking for the MTH steam engine 20-3145-1. I see a new one is coming out this year with the same cab # 2584. Any thoughts if I should keep looking for the old one or order the new one MTH 20-3501 -1? Also does anyone know what cab # will be on engine with the set with the madison cars--MTH 20-3500-1?  Thanks, Don in Montana

The new one is PS3, which I would prefer, and also $100 cheaper.  Price reduction? I didn't think they did stuff like that anymore?  PS3 has LED lights, no battery, DCC, supposedly better sound (capability anyway) and more which I forget.

If the cab number is important to you, the text lists the same number, but the pictures shown are different numbers.  Old is O-54 and new is O-42 also. Carefully compare the features listed on the MTH pages, there are some differences.  I was referring to their website descriptions under the respective product numbers.

I am currently looking at pages 78/79 in the MTH 2013 Volume 2 catalog:

1) Item #20-3499-1 "Hi-Rail wheels" is cab number 2579 (painted green).

2) Item #20-3501-1 "Hi-Rail wheels" is cab number 2584 (painted green)

3) Item #20-3508-1 "Hi-Rail wheels" is cab number 2578 (painted black).

4) Item #20-3500-1 "S-2 Empire Builder Passenger Set, and shows cab number 2581.

Thus, you have a choice of two different paint jobs, and FOUR different cab numbers!

Can't get much better than that for a Great Northern modeler.
