I have one of the early MTH operating brakeman boxcars.
When I power up the track it starts running and does not stop.
It goes through the complete open/close cycle, over and over.
How do I fix it?

Probably a limit switch not closing. Adjust it. G

I dug up this photo which I had posted in a previous thread (which of course I can't find). As GGG says it's probably a simple mechanical adjustment like bending the lever/leaf of the micro-switch.
Of course if you press the microswitch, hear the mechanical "click" of the switch closing, and this does not stop the cycle, then you could have a defective switch. If it comes to that, the switch just has 3 soldered wires so it's a modest DIY repair.

The early boxcars are as pictured above. The later ones do not use the lever on the microswitch and their is little to no adjustment on the position of the switch. Gluing a piece of cardstock to the end of the plunger that contacts the switch with increase its travel enough to close the switch.
