SJC has it exactly right, don't be afraid, a good twist will pop the top right off.  The first time you do this it may seem extreme but it isn't.  Good luck.  I painted the insides and added people and even though you can't really see any detail when it is all back together it still looks better than an empty car.

It's a little stressful.  Be patient and take your time.  The first one I did took forever, but once I had the motion down, the subsequent ones were far easier.  Be careful with the screws - a couple of mine were tough and I almost stripped them out.  Be sure to have a screwdriver that fits well.  

Here is a bit of information that is slightly off topic but since Stumper mentioned screws. Did you know that there are METRIC philips head screwdrivers. If you have a metric philips head screw and your screwdriver seams to wobble around in the head that is the reason why. The metric head screwdrivers are not as pointy as the english ones and therefor fit better. Good luck trying to find one though, I have been looking for years. I used to have a set I got from the company I worked for but had to turn them in when I left. They got them from some place in Japan.
