Which type of MTH F3 are you interested in modifying?  MTH has made several different types of F3 sets over the years, e.g., early Premier versions with only two motors in the lead unit, no smoke, and Protosound or horn only; current RailKing Scale F3s with two motors in the lead unit and smoke only in the lead unit; and others.

Would you help us by providing further details such as product number, date manufactured, and product line, i.e., Rugged Rails, RailKing, or Premier.  Thanks very much.

As to adding sound to the dummy A, as above, it depends on what product line and other factors.

Easy, but some what expensive.  If this is already a PS-2 unit, you need to swap out the slave unit in the trailing powered A and add a PS-2 board (upgrade) to make it an independent unit like the Lead A.  Then run as a Lash up.

For the B unit, you could go with a PS-1 smoke unit which runs off track power.  Otherwise you need to move the slave unit into the B unit to have control over a PS-2 smoke unit.

So your looking at an upgrade kit $180, plus smoke unit $50, plus the labor.  G

RockvilleBear and GGG,

Thanks for your responses.

1) It is an A-B-A set of Premier ALCO FA/B-2 w/PS3

2) I even considered adding a second B unit.

3) I will contact MTH tech support to see if PS2 sound 'will play with' the PS3 in the A unit as I don't believe PS3 kits are available.

4) While sound is all I really want to add to the trailing A unit, making it a seperate unit is not out of the question either.

5) I would be doing the upgrade/mod myself - so it's a labor of fun.

Right now I am seeking the advise/information before I take any steps toward doing this.

As always, I appreciate the help and advise of those who know.
