Stopped by the LHS. Eye-balled an MTH Hudson with Proto-3 on the wall rack. The store manager took it down for me, added some smoke fluid, and showed me what it could do. I was very impressed. I am assuming it was scale. It would be my first Proto-3 engine. They are passenger engines as many of you know but I would have to put it in front of a local freight. All of my passenger trains have theme matched locomotives.  It does feature passenger sounds. It was in LEHIGH VALLEY. . Is there an equivalent, under $400,  Proto-3 freight steamer that you would recommend? What do you think of this Hudson?

Thanks.....

It is not scale. My LHS has the same engine on the shelf. Not my roadname of choice but it was nicely done however based on other Railking Imperial engines (the product line of this engine), I had a few issues with it. It did not have builders plates nor did it have chains on the tender trucks. I didn't buy it nor was I ever planning to buy it. With MTH's delay in steam lately, I got the impression it was "hurried out" and some things were left off in order to ship it ASAP. I also got the same impression from the 4-8-4 Northern that came out in the fall.

If a freight engine is what you are looking for, I have the PS3 B6 0-6-0 Railking Imperial switcher on order. I should show up in the next few weeks. It has builders plates, truck chains, in addition to the real coal load, wireless drawbar, PS3, etc, etc, etc. All will have freight sounds. I have the B&O, 30-1570-1 on order. I believe there are 4 coming, up until 30-1573-1. If freight is what you want, under $400, the 0-6-0 will work for you.
