I have an old MTH Railking S2 steam turbine that I am looking to upgrade to DCS using either an older PS2 kit or one of the newer PS3 kits that MTH is offering.
I'm wanting to know are a few things, as I have never done one of these before I am really working in the dark.
Can anyone who has done an upgrade before give me some advice on where to begin? And which kit would be better, the PS2 or the PS3 one? Or would it make a difference either or? I would perfer the PS3 as there would be no batteries to worry about. 12795412_10205891593120185_4230719538012169720_n

The PS2 and PS3 steam upgrade kits are virtually identical in installation complexity.  PS2 kits are hard to find.  A PS2 can be installed with a supercapacitor in lieu of a battery.  Unless the loco has sentimental value, you might be better off looking for a new RailKing and selling this off.  Be aware that the price on upgrade kits has risen.  I believe it's now $199 regular, and somewhat less for MTHRRC members.

I can't tell from the picture, but is this the RTR Bantam engine?  Or the fuller sized Rail King.  If the speaker in the tender is at the front, you may have clearance issues with the PS-32 Upgrade kit.  If speaker at rear it should fit.  As far as installation, go to MTH sight and look up the upgrade instructions and read them.  That will allow you to see what is involved.   The Rail King Turbine, should not be an issue.  G

I upgraded this same locomotive to PS2 about a year ago.  There is plenty of room inside for everything and I do not recall any problems doing the job.

I think I used the sound file for the Imperial version.  It has no chugging only white noise.  You will have to fiddle around the volume to get the white noise just right so it doesn't drive you crazy but you can still hear the bell, whistle and other sounds.

Good luck.

Thanks guys so much for the in put!
This engine is indeed the 30-1149-1 Railking version from 1999. The speaker is indeed in the front, but it is shot. It still runs, but no sounds are coming out of the engine. However, other then that, the engine is in good operating condition.

I most likely will be getting the PS3 kit since I'm an MTHRRC member I can get it a bit cheaper. As to the one comment, since I traded some HO stuff to get this engine and have no money put into it it really doesn't matter is I buy the kit or not to upgrade it. Since I've got the old one I may as well work with what I've got and upgrade it anyways.
