Impossible to remove battery due to the circuit board sitting on top of the battery. I guess remove the front truck to get access to the board screws. Or easier remove the remove the rear motor. Question: how does one lift out the rear motor? I'd rather not mess around with the PS2 board. Thanks.

Is it an 8.4 volt battery? The owners manual page 14 says to remove 2 screws.

To lift out the motor, turn the loco upside down and remove the screw from the center of the truck.
Thanks. Yea I removed the bracket but there is absolutely no clearance to remove the battery. For this model MTHfor some reason put sidewalls around the battery and put the board right on top of it. So board or motor have to come out. Thanks again.
I installed a BCR in my MTH SW1500 with 5-volt PS2. As I recall, I was able to loosen and lift up the board, gently move some wires (without disconnecting them), and slide the battery out of its holder. If there are screws securing the battery holder, you may have to remove or just loosen them. I don't recall removing either motor.

Well, the motor is easier than the board to remove. If the battery needs to be changed, it's probably due for a lube anyway. I would replace the battery with a BCR so you don't need to remove it again.
I removed the motor; was a snap and quick. I just didn't want to mess with the board. Thanks all.

My board is held down by screws at the base that are inaccessible unless I remove the front trucks. So in realty more work than than the motor removal.
Well, if you remove the motor, the front truck falls away.
So, for other, if you loosen the motor mount screw you gain access to the screws by tilting truck away. Loosen or remove board heat sink screws. Lift board enough to get battery swapped out, put back together making sure no wires pinched. I hate those switchers along with diesels that require trucks to be dropped to access side frame screws for traction tires. G
