I am running an MTH RK PS2 C&O Hudson (30-1412-1) which has less than an hour of run time on it.  I brought it out of storage and the smoke only pours out when the loco is in neutral, not forward or reverse.  It used to smoke like a house afire.  I run conventional only with a PW KW transformer.  What could be the problem?  Thanks in advance.

Try a feature reset and if no help then a Factory reset.

It's possible the motor on the smoke unit is not running.

Could be a bad wire or a funky setting in the control board.

A reset should eliminate the latter.

Always possible the motor up and died too, they are not expensive and MTH usually has them on hand.

Disconnecting the connector from the board and putting a battery across the motor leads should make it spin up, if not, the motor is dead.

No, you need a bell and whistle button to do conventional reset on the PS-2.  Sounds like the tach reader went bad.  Is the engine chuffing and does it have speed control?  If not check the tach reader gap and tape condition.

If you do have chuff and speed control, the fan impeller may be loose.  Spins fine in neutral but when starting and stopping with motion the impeller just slips on shaft.  IF that is the case you put a drop of super glue on the end of the shaft and impeller.  G
