MTH Track Interface Unit curiosity

I’m new to DCS and have had my WTIU for a couple months. Not a complaint, but an idle curiosity about the design. I wonder why MTH didn’t just make all four channels variable with the ability to optionally set any or all of them as fixed like the two variable channels that we have today? Why didn’t MTH just make them all the same (i.e. variable with the option to set as fixed)? Seems to me like it could provide a bit more flexibility by allowing four fixed or four variable or any combination of both. Perhaps variable channels outputs are more expensive to produce?
