I realize this is a O gauge site but I also know that many on here run large scale trains.  I am enthralled by the operation of MTH's Triplex and considered finding one for my O layout.  However, after seeing that the MTH triplex was being shipped, I am thinking I  might enjoy one on my garden RR.

Does anyone have the large scale Triplex and if so, what are your thoughts?

What is the minimum radius?  I have 8 feet diameter curves available, is that large enough?

Does any one know who sells MTH large scale products?  I have tried their locator without any luck.

Does any one here  run MTH large scale and if so, will it look totally out of place with Aristocraft rolling stock?

Would appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks,

Don

Holy Cow... that thing is fantastic... I love the Triplex and that is one of the best I have ever seen. Please Please Please... Lionel. Make a Vision Line Erie Triplex. I have every Vision Line steamer you have made... but the Triplex is missing and would be a great addition. ahhhhh... That's it I'm writing a letter to Mr. Hitchcock tonight.

Dear Howard,

While your company makes the greatest trains on the planet something is missing!

Excellent large scale engine.  I think MTH had one running at York a number of years ago.  It also has a "steam" whistle and smoke coming from the rear of the tender.

At one time they were on sale from the MTH website at a very reasonable price.

I have been tempted to pull the trigger on this for some time and may do so.

A 8' dia curve is large enough; it ran my Accucraft K-28 without a problem on a friends 8' curve.

Triplex One Gauge was poor seller for MTH and they were blowing them out for $799 on shptron. I purchased one direct from MTH and it arrived badly damaged despite steel frame support. They are very fragile and finicky for G and I would never have one shipped. Beautiful MTH product but other steam engines would have sold better.

Check Raymon's site for more Triplex details.

Alan

Thanks to all who responded.  I checked with MTH and all the other dealers suggested here but no one had inventory.  It seems those shops that used to cary MTH Gauge One products are no longer stocking any.  I also noticed that the last MTH catalog is 2013 so maybe even MTH is cutting back on their large scale offerings.

In my initial post, I mentioned that I had seen that more Triplexes  were arriving this month from MTH but evidently, I was confused with the MTH numbering system and it is an HO version that is being shipped.  In talking with MTH, they did not expect any more at this time.

There is one listed on ebay but it had more issues than I wanted to deal with.

Maybe I will look for an O gauge one.

Happy railroading,

Don

Happy

Don,

Alan D. is correct. Shipping was a big issue. I had three. Two were damaged severely in shipment and needed many replacement parts, especially the fronts of the engines. One engine was split almost in two.

I have two left. When they run they run great and are great pullers. The weak spot, in my opinion, is the way the power pickup sliders are mounted. Easily snapped if track is not perfect or turnout frogs like Aristocraft's are somewhat deep or irregular. If you can find one at the blowout sale price, buy it.
