Got this problem with my z4000 start up, all was working great with the DCS TIU and AIU. I was adding some switches(Lionel) was on the last two all seemed good. Went to program into DCS remote and the transformer started up and MTH train powered up but suddenly the volts and amps dropped and train shut down. No power to TIU (no light on). The red light on the z4000 was blinking . I looked all through wiring and found no shorts. Tried several times and it keeps doing same thing. I was wodering if its the breaker but I can't find any info in manual about changing it or if that even is the problem. At first all powers up to 18 volts train powers up and after a few seconds the volts just drop down and train shuts off and so does the TIU. I have the download for z4000 manual and also The DCS book download.

When you first turn the transformer on both levers must be fully closed., other wise the red overload light will come on and the transformer will shut itself off, that's probably what you did on power up you forget to close the throttles BEFORE turn on,
Try it again the correct way and let me know if everything powers up like normal again!

Alan, he says things start but then shut off, so it can't be the handles.
Unseasoned. You'll have to start disconnecting what you've added until things return to normal. Somewhere there's either a defective component or a wrong connection.
Yes I always shut handles down in start up. The red light on transformer is off at first to 18 volts but starts to blink as voltage shuts down i guess i will have to double check the last two switches I installed. After voltage dropped the red light on transformer stays lit'
I have the switches on a separate distribution board powered by the transformer acc, port. I disconnected it to see if that was the problem but it still did the same thing so its not the switches. All was fine yesterday could it be a bad circuit breaker ?
Try disconnecting all the outputs from your Z4000, if it still blinks the transformer has a problem. If it doesn't blink, reconnect the outputs one at a time, waiting a minute or two before connecting the next set of wires. When it starts blinking, you have found the problem area in the last wires to be reconnected.
Thanks rtr I didn't even think to do that. Did as you said and its not the transformer Have 2 loops going and its the track with the last two switches I added. I think its something with the track connection since the switches were disconnected and it was doing it. I know I had a little trouble connecting the fastrack together (tight fit sometimes with all the wire connections) I will check the pin connection. Thanks again at least I have somewhere to start now ! Have a great night !!
