todays results....
Dave, A+ for your efforts. That looks amazing!
Did you use the pen ring?
Tom
sure did, thanks for the help.
In my cabin car project thread I included a pen with one of those rings, so let me know if you ever need another one.
Tom
after we talked last night...I started eyeing up all the in house pens that have the rings...I like the clicker type pens anyway.
That looks great Dave!
Looks great Dave. If I ever meet you in person, I know to hide my pens!
Tom
you're safe..already have more than enough pens!
But if you hide every Pen does that mean you'll only be running NYC ?
I've been holding that joke in me for too long.
...or maybe not long enough...?
Can you even have too many Penns ?
Oh geez, there goes this thread! This Adriatic guy is starting to post again!
Welcome back.
Tom
I'm always lurking and I'd never leave forever unless asked to nicely...and even then I'd still at least be lurking.
Hmmm....I'd better add "by the right people" to that asking bit, lol.
Besides, I figured Steamer needed to see a larger audience to motivate this puppi into its completion, before I can manage to finish what he has inspired with this.
...no pressure, but are you done yet?
Lol, I guess I can multitask building and waiting together.
Nope...How 'bout now? Done yet?
no, not done yet. I had a motor lined up, found one on da bay for a whole .99 opening bid. Had it until less than 12 hours left on the auction only to get home from work in the morning to find the auction was cancelled due to "an error in the listing" That's OK, got another one lined up. So in the meantime I've been going over my 600 series passenger cars.
I picked this original 201/203 motor a while back, I paid a bit more than the one you were bidding on, but I'd send it on it's way for what I paid if you are interested. It's one of those things you grab just in case. BTW, it was listed under ho scale brass motor.... I'm still not sure how I ended up finding it in the first place...

Wow - a 203 mechanism should simplify things! What a generous offer.
Does anyone make the main rods for these? I have an original 203 with a repaired main rod that was broken in half. Bought cheap about 45 years ago and still one of my favorite engines. Bell tender too!
I put postwar trucks on it, so not completely original.
Jim
gee I dunno...do you have any references?
I think the main rods are 227 units. The problem is the cross head guides are different to fit those cross heads. Check with Jeff at the Train tender, he has some of that stuff, I've been looking since I need some of those parts for my 203.

From the Olsen info sheets... If it's not appropriate for me to post that, please remove.

This is the problem I ran into years ago, and never found a solution. Hope you do.
this was waiting for me when I got home from work yesterday.
Inside was the motor Dennis had.Had a dead short (Dennis said he hadn't tested it). A quick look revealed a grenaded E Unit drum.
I swapped out the E Unit from another motor I just picked up.A quick cleaning and some fresh oil.......and 1879 moves!

very cool project!
Looking great Dave!!!!!!!!!!!!!You don't mess around. Sorry, If I had realized the drum was bad, I'd have tossed one in. Did you find the 1662 steam chest in there?
Looks great! I love kit bashing engines! I haven't done much to steamers yet, but now I want to go have some fun.
Well, You know, I didn't want to waste valuable packing peanuts Let me know when you tackle that Royal Blue, that'll be a fun challenge for sure. Let's see, Lionel, American Flyer, All Nation, JEP, Saki, I just wanted to make sure the contents were diverse (new term from HR at work).
so I assume the PRR boxcar is All Nation....and the other six drivered motor isd Saki? Are they DC? I added some juice to it and it jumped like a DC motor would on AC, but when I hooked up a DC HO transformer it didn't do anything.
It's AC DC universal. It might have some wiring issues. I thought I noticed one leg of the field moves in and out like the early prewar Chicago AF motors. I didn't look at it too much, just tossed it in. This 1954 catalog page from IMP (early Japan brass) shows what looks like the same motor in the cheap line of train. I think these are what later became the Saki line from IMP.

Good work!☺
Dave, Looks great and when you put on the front steps, I think that will make it look even better.
Tom
got home from work a bit ago, and my daughter said "you got a box in the mail"
I said I shouldn't, haven't bought anything.....got a great care package from Dennis Holler, which included the front coupler assembly for the 1615 project, and some piecey parts for the Royale Blue.
a BIG THANKS DENNIS!!!
It's good to have friends who can also supply parts!
Tom
or ideas!
True. Speaking of that...Don't forget to start up Switcher Saturday again!
Tom
Houston......we have front coupler and Mains!(actually just one for now...need a couple parts for the other side) Thanks to Dennis Holler for the big assist.
Had to do some grinding on the inside of the boiler shell where the rear of the motor mounts, since the Prewar motor I got from Dennis sat a touch too far forward to allow the coupler assembly to fit.

Very nice Dave. With some of those engines that I also have, I had always thought of blackening out the middle section of the crosshead guide area (if you know what I mean) to decrease the somewhat excessive chrome/silvery look. Just a thought and it probably does not matter to most folks.
Tom
that's a good idea Tom. I imagine paint would work best....
If you go that route, I would just do the recessed background area and keep the upper and lower guides as they are.
Tom
that's what I thought, it would wear off if I did the whole thing.
