Maybe a black paint marker would make quick work of it? You wouldn't have to tape anything off, just remove the drive rod and mark away...
did some blackening as suggested....enough or another coat?

Dave, Hard to say. I think it looks much better. Really up to you if you think it needs more. Also, I don't recall your layout top having a white layer...is that foam or Homasote and does it seem better?

yeah a few years ago I wanted a third main, and I had added some wood "just to get it done". Never was happy with it, had to add shims to the curve. So last winter I finally did it over more better. Just need to get to the hardware and get the paint.
