I finally got to go to a Menards and purchase a few "O" gauge items. We live in north Texas, which is about 400 miles from the nearest Menards store. I have always envied the folks on here who can just drop by a Menards and check out the latest offerings.

Well, while returning from vacation on Sunday, we saw a Menards store in Salina, Ks. My wife suggested we stop in and look at the train stuff, since it was Fathers day, and she wanted to get me a gift. Sounded good to me. I could not find any train items, so I asked a clerk. She told me the train stuff had been moved "upstairs", in the storage area. This did not sound encouraging. She directed us to the elevator and said to go on up and check out what they had. We went up, and at first I was disappointed. Just a small section of shelving with dust-covered train items. I then thought, what the heck, some Menards is better than none. They had 4 different buildings, about 2 dozen freight cars, mostly flats with military vehicles, and a small assortment of track.

I did enjoy finally getting my hands onto some of these Menards items, and was surprised at the weight of the cars. Ended up buying a Quonset hut, feed mill, and Yankee Lady boxcar. They did not have any power adaptors for the building lights, so I will have to order those online.

So, while the selection was limited, I enjoyed browsing what they had, and came home with my first 3 Menards purchases. Nice Fathers Day present. now, if they would just build some stores here in Texas.

I got the Feed Mill for Father's Day as well!  That building is surprisingly heavy! I too have to get the adapter for the lights.  Although, I believe Gunrunnerjohn has previously posted on a work-around for the lighting.  I may have to search that out.

Now for some envy: I live 4 miles from a Menard's!

Menards is a great store, while on vacation in north Dakota  we went to menards, which is about 1700 miles from my house. The fire dY no train stuff they said it was packed up till winter. I made a comment on here and Mark from Menards had the train stuff back on shells the ne,t day. They were up stairs also but at least they were back out again. I bought 2 buildings, some tanks, and 2 flatcars.

Jeff, you must be closer to the Red River than I am in DFW, since Salina is about 436 miles from us.  We pass thru Salina about 1x/month, maybe 6 wks, and have shopped that Menards extensively.  They just have stuff that HD and L big boxes don't have. It's nice to see a change of merchandise.

Actually, I just estimated the miles. I think we are closer to 400 miles from Salina. We are located in Denton.

A clarification concerning your comment that you have been envious of those who have been able to routinely stop into a Menards to see the latest train offerings.

Menards doesn't stock trains year-round. The only things anyone can find on the shelves is stock leftover from the previous Christmas selling season. Outside of that season, any of the new train products you see listed here or from Menards' train magazine ads or emails aren't sent to the stores unless they are special-ordered by customers for immediate pickup.

The trains typically start showing up in early November in the seasonal department that includes toys. Even then, not all the products that were released during the previous year make it to the stores.

So your best bet is to order online anyway if you are interested in the latest offering anytime from January to October.
