Stewart763:  You might check and see if the smoke unit does not have a felt gasket on top next to the boiler smoke stack. It should be there to seal the end of the smoke unit to the boiler stack. If it is missing, then you will have to get one or fashion one to seal the space/gap.   Another item to look at is to see if the top of the smoke unit has not popped off. In several cases I have seen the top circular cap come off and the smoke unit is open to the inside of the boiler allowing the smoke to waffe inside and little out the stack.
