MY SD40-2 IN 3D

Shapeways is a big company and has certainly more powerful 3D printers that my makers, here, have not. I know now what they are able to do and what price they apply; Shapeways makes a very good work but expensive. And more, when I can find spare parts on the ATLAS website, I don't hesitate one second; cost is negligible! and I have, like everybody, to pay attention to my money!!!!

Before continuing to build the SD40, something I wanted to do since a while: update the motors housings.

The first I made were very simplistic but operational: motor housing on the left and middle dummy housing on the right (flat top because the bolster is just above.

I thought it was better to re-do these parts and update them to look like (almost!) the real one, always thinking that I had to fit them to my model, even if these parts are not completely visible.

I found a few photos on the net and here is the result of my work; the dimensions are always the same but I changed the shape and added some details:

The dummy housing has had the same updates but the top is always cut!

All these parts are now ready to be printed, for exemple this one:

I notice now on the drawing above that it lacks a 1mm hole at the bottom of the left part!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it means that I have updated the drawings but not the . stl print file!!!!!!! we should have four eyes!!!

Truly amazing.  Your skills and artistry is top notch. Did you used to model in "S" scale?  I remember seeing photos of modules and trains built by a modeler in France (I think) whose skills and attention to detail were similar to yours.

Work of the day:

Temporary assembly of the long hood to check out if I find something wrong:

First, insert of the screws in to the chassis from underneath:

It lacks the motor side access on the left side and the rear air grilles: these parts are not in accordance with what I want; so my "3D guy" is doing them again. 

I asked prices for the door latches and other parts but no answer.................

As long as I don't have them, I can't give the long hood the first coat of primer!

I'm also waiting for the front short hood; I gave it to be done by another 3D maker; hope this time it will be all right!

A loooong break all summer long for working on this engine! forced break too because my main computer has broken; I just bought a new one last week. I have another older one which helped me but all the files were on the broken one! So I kept on making 3D drawings for other projects and they kept me very busy!

So I take again my tools out of the drawers and began to work!

What I wanted to finish: the rear long hood.

First all the parts were painted with a grey primer and nuts installed to fix the shell on the chassis:

Aftern came the assembly of the long hood; it's a shame that I had not an actopus near me to hold all together while I was setting the glue! ...but everything went well, doing slowly and quietly!!

Now, I am going to send to my 3D maker the stl files for the dynamic brake housing and all the parts for the cab.

I finally received from SHAPEWAYS the first parts of the cab after many mistakes of delivery by UPS!!!!!!!!!! hoppefully, nothing broken!

The quality is top level, very fine making and dimensionning.

The two parts on the left are made in a resint that allows printing of details from 0,2 mm (hollow or in relief), the part on the right is made in another resine, more "ordinary" because less visible (it's the floor of the cab).

It remains now to clean them, add some more details on the two walls (door latches, grab iron, nuts for fitting with the chassis, etc...) and paint with primer.

Just an FYI, in case you have been off this forum the last couple of months, Archer Transfers has a 3d print on those EMD "knuckle Buster" latches that you are printing at Shapeways. 

Just something to think about for the next EMD locomotive Project.

Thanks PRR for the idea! I don't make a print of these latches; I have the PSC brass product but the ARCHER one is certainly a better solution and also less expensive; I just have looked at their website when I read your information.

Next EMD project! let me finish this one, please!

Latches and ends of hand rails installed on the two sides:

The holes for the end handrails (0,6 mm dia) are made during the printing.

On the right part, the whitish traces that you can see around the window, above and under the latches are inside the material, not on the surface.

You can notice the fineness of the details rendering; it's amazing! I didn't think that my drawings would be so well respected!

I inserted and glued with liquid CA the nuts in the thickness of the resine in hexagonal holes I previewed on the 3D drawing. These nuts corresond to the norm DIN 934 TR (in french Taille Réduite: reduced size). The OD is more little than common nuts of this size. These one are M2.

Next parts sent to SHAPEWAYS (cab front and back sides, roof); estimated delivery: not before december 15/20th . Meanwhile, I will work on other project....

Installation of the first stanchions on the side of the engine; not easy to bend, form and fit the bronze wire near the stairs....

Work made while I'm waiting the 3D parts I ordered.....

I sympathise with you on waiting for parts.

I ordered some  loco wheel sets my mistake should have double checked the number I wrote, wrong one's arrived had to send them back yesterday now don't know when I will get the correct one's It's hard when your overseas.

Received the front and back face of the cab last 19th.

Now the assembly is done:

Next step: roof, number board and front short hood, but next year.....
