Yeah, mine is perfect. I run only conventional so did not test some of the Legacy features.

I have a few issues with my Northern (which so far I have straightened out myself) so I checked the Mallet carefully when it arrived a week after. Perfect. Good runner: it runs very well, slowly and smoothly, and the cuirse works well , the lights are good, whistle and bell sound okay to me, etc. Nice detail, and everything works as it should. I tested the whistle steam effect only once: I like the feature but it would fill up my trainroom with smoke if I used it much.

Very distinct sound, different than the Challenger, as it should be given the compound vs. simple cycle, but a more complicated sound than the Northern - clearly there are more cylinders doing something. I was sort of impressed by that.

This loco is perfect but it has a lot of boiler front overhang on curves (I posted pictures in another thread about it, so did others) so i will not run it too often. But its a great loco.

Over the past 15 Lionel locos I bought I am 13 for 15 perfect. The conventional Mogul had some sort of issue stuttering and stalling (I think binding of the gears inside it): it was not electronics in the tender, becuse it would do the same when I switched tenders with the Atlantic while the Atlantic would continue to run as it should with the Mogul tender). Ulimtately I decided not to send the Mogul back for repairs but use it in another project. I might take it apart and try to fix it in the future.

I also had a Legacy U-Boat (UP U-30C) that worked great out of the box and had the very best diesel sound EVER. But the sound card died at about 3/4 hour of run time, and it started sequencing in weird ways. I sent it back yesterday to get fixed. If it matters the last loco i got from Lionel was the DD35 just a week ago or a bit more, and it was perfect, too
I have both- the WL&E and the C&O versions from the 1st issues-both have almost the same whistle. The N&W does have a distinctly different whistle. I do remember Captrain having it at the club years ago and I think it had some sort of "hooter" type of whistle.

Regardless of which one you have-the first issue or the Legacy issue-these mallets run excellently.
