I finally got my hands on the excellent Reading G-3 4-6-2. Of course I'd like to install PS2 so I can run it on the club layout, but the engine has no flywheel. Is there an "off the shelf" solution to replace the can motor with a shorter motor with a flywheel to accomodate the tach strip, or is there another option?

The first idea that hits me..... is to attach a home made flywheel to that pulley that drives the belt. You just need to get it to a decent diameter. I would ask first, how big is it around (diameter) where the belt ends by the motor?
It almost appears big enough to add a tape to.
Is that pulley held on with a set screw? Perhaps making a new drive belt pulley with attached flywheel surface? I've bought ones and made my own set screw by drilling and tapping. Any access to a lath to make it??
Dumb question? Why not do TMCC? The ERR Cruise Commander will work with no flywheel.
I wonder if the tach reader could read the belt if it had stripes???

What does the lower pulley, driveshaft area look like down in there?
Can a flywheel be mounted against the pulley?
Not clear in the picture, but could a can motor be mounted forward of the pulley?
You might contact Frank Timko for a replacement motor. His address in my my thread of yesterday on upgrading a Pulmor to PS2. Note also my comment about a statement at the April York DCS users meeting, about a non-tach-tape version of PS3.
Joe may have a point about applying stripes to the belt; it bears some thought.

That's cool! I was hoping the pulley was held on with set screws and was easily removed. Attaching a home made flywheel is easy. I have done several now in G scale where engines don't come with them.
It appears that one could be added to that flat area of the pulley to make it larger.
