I was having trouble with my Lionel Legacy Norfolk Southern SD40 (item number 6-38398) loosing power on most switches on the layout.  Turns out, only one truck was providing power to the engine.  I removed the truck that was not providing power and there is a 3 pin connector that provides power from the outside rail, the inside rail and to the remote coupler.  Two of the three wires were broken off at the connector plug.  Have not found a way to attach new wire to the two broken ones.  I went on Lionel website with the parts diagram for this engine and could not find any part that fit the description.

It seems logical that this harness was used on many engines of the time (around 2007).

Does anyone know if Lionel offered a replacement harness?   If no replacement harness is available, has anyone else found this problem and if so, how did you repair it?

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,

Don

A photo of your issue would help.  Is this what your connector looks like?  Are wires broken off to this?

Also, your Lionel item number is whack in your title and description.  Shouldn't it be 6-38939?

Yes, this is assembled in the truck assembly.  The wires that are soldered to these pins are inOK.  I need the connector with wires that plug into this connector.

Thanks,

Don

Lionel lists the lead wire w/pins as 2.0 and 2.5 mm:

LEOCO TERMINAL / 2.0 & 2.5 MM / W/BLACK WIRE - 691CN25BLK

Well, I can tell you from first hand experience using a lot of both JST-EH and JST-PH connectors, the pins do not interchange well!  Yes, you can cram the 2mm ones into a 2.5mm shell and sometimes they'll work.  Trying to cram the 2.5mm connector into the 2mm pitch shells rarely works out, they don't latch properly.

I'll renew my recommendation to use the proper terminations for the connector if you don't want endless frustration.  There's a reason that the manufacturers make contacts for each size of connector.

Thank you to everyone who responded.  A special thanks to Mr Miller who had the correct connector  and was so kind as to send me the proper connector with the needed leads attached.

We are certainly blessed to have available to us a forum populated with such helpful and generous folks!

Thanks also the OGR for providing this place for sharing our hobby with others from across the globe.

Sounds like you need some of these:

They fit inside your connector that should look like this:

Wrong connector, the connector in the truck is a JST-EH 2.5mm connector, the pins for that JST-PH 2.0mm connector will NOT work.

As someone who isn't an expert with electronics, these connectors have always confused me - seems like there are very subtle differences in size and shape.  I've looked at the DigiKey website and Amazon, and it's very difficult to tell if a product will fit.  I've noticed that Amazon sells assortments with a crimper tool - is this the best way to go?  Is there a particular assortment that is recommended?

I'm also not excited about ordering one from Lionel and paying $10 shipping on a $5 item when they can be bought in bulk for much less.
