What is the new load inside?

Looks like stacks of trays with rivets.

???

These are not the common Lionel box loads.

Can someone ID this feature?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Those could be LCL bulkheads?  They aren't the load itself, just a panel to seperate shipments.  Some were hung from a roof track on the car centerline.  They could be shifted left or right anf could be rotated to access the load.  Made deliveries intersting as whatever was loaded last had to be unloaded first.

Thanks Ed & Chuck.

Lionel’s new LOAD RETAINERS –

These load retainers would have had wood facing on both sides of a steel frame, having latches that could lock into slots in the car floor as well as in the interior side sheathing of the car.

Loaded items would have been stacked up behind these retainers, which were then moved back and latched to hold the loaded items in place at each end of the car.

Also there could have been some paper work stapled to the outside faces of the retainers to indicate anything needing special handling or inspection upon arrival.

I'd vary that tan or wood color on the individual planks so it is not so uniform.

It should show wear - scrapes and cracks, some felt tip pen markings and random small holes where other things may have been nailed to them.

Other boards might be recent replacements, looking newer in color.

The lowest wood strips along the floor would be dark and dirtier from being kicked, pushed with a fork lift, pried with long crowbars or otherwise helped into position. They might show some random, light places where pieces of the wood had been chipped out by a fork lift.

This interior 'weathering' should include the boards going up next to the car side, where they were wedged and locked into place.

The cleanest boards would be near the top and the center of the retainer.

Different browns and grays applied over the Lionel tan might help.

Hope this helps. That LV car looks fabulous!
