I have purchased a DCS TIU and remote plus Barrys book from this forum.  Good start! Now I need a engine to play and learn.  I do not have an engine with DCS or TMCC.

I have 2 questions.  Do I, Buy a used start up unit to play and learn???     Or maybe take a inhouse unit, buy a dummy and convert to DCS?  I have a powered Southern FT A unit Lionel 6-34501.  Maybe on the forum I could find a dummy A or B to match and have DCS installed.  Whats my best way to go?  Just want to learn at this time

Thanks for your time

Tommy

My recommendation would be to purchase a new MTH PS3 locomotive (or set) from a reliable source.  You could buy a starter set (always a good value) and sell the track and DCS Remote Commander that comes with these sets.  I have done this several times in the past, and will be doing so again with a couple of the set components this coming weekend.

Or, you could just purchase a PS3 locomotive from the RailKing line--diesel or steam, depending on your preferences.

I would not go with a used unit because you likely won't know how it was used and you won't have any warranty protection.  A new locomotive will not cost you a whole lot, and you'll be starting out in DCS with something that should give you a good overall experience as you learn all the features of that system.
