I have been looking to purchase this set and as I am living on a fixed income, I find the set price way out of my income bracket. I noticed that on the bay that some dealers are breaking up the sets. you can get the searchlight car and the caboose for about thirty nine dollars and the C & O engine for about two hundred dollars.. Also, the action car can bring up to two hundred dollars. All this said, will the price of the set come down and the price of the action cars come down.

Charles Ro and Nassau Hobbies had closeouts on these sets that were attractive but now seem to be over. I had considered it but own an original so passed. Nicholas Smith still has the set at $425. I don't think the individual pieces or the set will come down anytime soon on the bay since it's all about greed. Remember that buying from a dealer means you have a warranty.
I agree with FlyerRich. Don't expect prices to drop as most people paid more than $425 so will not sell for less. You should grab one in the set box complete at $425. Put it on a credit card and space out the cost may be a solution for your fixed income.

Once I ran a balance on my credit card, purchasing things I really didn't need. By the time I paid it off, those things cost quite a bit more, due to the interest I paid.
Swore I'd never do that again. - So far, I haven't.
This one is not a lot cheaper, but includes free shipping.

It appears that the going price for a new Defender set is in the range of $400 - $425. YMMV. There is a fair amount of content in the set for the money.
