I had a nice visit today to the San Luis Obispo, CA Railroad Museum and spotted this “new” to the Museum flatcar:

This sign is attached:

And these are the trailers that will be restored and eventually placed on the flatcar:

I’m trying to carve out some time to ride the Surfliner up there.

That's the final terminal for some Surfliners, and the ride up through the San Fernando Valley suburbia and out onto the central coast is certainly scenic and -- if you are an SP fan -- historic from Daylight days.  The museum exhibits seem to be focused on the Coast Line, where some of the very best SP railroading occurred back in the day.

However, the northern half of the Coast Route is noteworthy, too, with the helper district mountain grade of Cuesta Hill starting right after leaving the San Luis Obispo station, and then being back and forth in and out of the oak covered Coast Range, and the Valley floor, including tunnels and Watsonville, where cab-forward steam reigned until the mid-1960's..  That would be an additional train ride, but it is real SP-style territory.

I am a fan of it all!  I don’t know if we’ll ride the entire coast, we did do a short CalTrain trip to San Jose several years ago. But we’re looking forward to the Surfliner trip, before the bluffs in Del Mar collapse.
