As per an e-mail from Matt Ashba to me at the beginning of May, Lionel is committed to building and delivering the Defender set. No updated info on timing, however.

Talked with the Lionel folks at York. They are having issues with the bell ringer in the engine and the USM box car and rocket launcher combo. As Bob said they are still committed to the set, and while the shipping schedule still shows July, that date will most likely slip again.
This is the only set I ever pre-ordered as soon as the catalog came out, thinking it would be a sure sell out, unfortunately that was over two years ago!
