Now that the dumb '55 Fords have been released from their claustrophobic
fate, it's become time to kick back and enjoy this fine chooch...now
that I've got the time to give it it's just due. Each car in this
outfit is actually a little masterpiece. The N5c cabin is especially
enjoyable, as I've never had one brand new in PRR before! The only car
I thought was a bit plain was the NYCS gon with the ramp and culvert
sections. The ramp can be removed easily, and since I don't have a
loader/unloader, it will be used with the sections laying flat in the
car's belly. The New Haven box 646-735 is really neat, and features
a textured sort of paint finish similar to older PW original Lionels.
The trucks are a mixture of bar-end and AAR features. They are more
sturdy than the plastic trucks that they're a copy of, but not as
solid as an original bar-end unit. The Geep is well done and better
by far than the UP Archive loco I got a few months back...for whatever
reasons! Just greater attention to detail in construction, would be my
guess. The new horn with reverb is awesome! Will be spending a lot of
time running this new chooch around the tree this season; she's a winner!

jaygee,

Sorry for so long in replying..just getting back on the board.  I'm always doing research on promotional outfits and came across your post.  Just curious where you heard the 12885-500 9836 was never actually available at Sears.  I just re-read all my research and re-looked at the '65 Sears catalog and didn't see anything leading to that conclusion.  Do you have an article or Sears document stating as such.  If so, could you please share.

As I wrote in my book, one reason the '65 version is so difficult to find in good shape (outfit box that is), is because for some reason, Lionel used a single walled corrugated box which was pretty flimsy for an outfit this size and weight.  You can find the box, but in C7 or better shape is extremely difficult.

I'm so excited to see Lionel reissuing these gems so everybody can experience them yet again.

Thanks,

John Schmid
