Well after running around for Christmas activities, family events, and kids school activities the stress of work... I realize I had a NEW Lionel locomotive sitting next to the layout ready to put on the track, test run, and have fun with....

To be honest, I was kind of wincing at it, getting a new locomotive these days with the latest QC problems has been sometimes a stressful ordeal!

But I know Lionel will always make things right so it was time to open the box and get her on the track.

My first observation was hmm , the box is very light for a Lionel locomotive... is there one in there?

Yep there it was safe and sound with no damage. Oddly enough, it looks like the mylar wrap and foam was cut in half, it did not cover the locomotive and tender entirely and wrap it fully at both ends,  but it did do its job.

Next was the instruction manual  - I noticed on the box and on the instructions it had been updated for Bluetooth control... well I run with Legacy so ' no time for that'.  And noticed when I open up the instruction book all the pages fell out in my lap. Seems that in all the haste some one forgot to secure it with staples.  Oh well, who "runs" the instruction book anyway?

I put the locomotive on the track and really like the looks, nice details... wow... and the tender was very cool. I also noted the serial number 21 out of 125... wow nice collector touch Ryan and Dave.

I am not a Santa Fe foamer but this thing has great looks. And with the advent of Lionel's first venture I had to get it.

I double checked the instructions for the location of Run and Program switches and noted that they are under the cab on this one... which is fine. Programed it and started it up and I was underway. Nice slow speed, NO Mogul lurch as I can tell... so I stopped it and added some grease the gear box as required and small oil on the linkages and noticed I don't have a Lionel caboose... only this MTH one...well had to make do... sorry Lionel. Maybe a brass caboose should be on the line up next time so I can buy one with the locomotive?

So running at a medium speed I did notice a lurch at speed step say 60? But it was only in reverse, and as I ran more and more it started to disappear... has anyone seen this? As you go higher in speed it disappears... I am going to continue running it confirm it starts to level out... I have seen this on newer engines and they usually it need some break in time and they are fine.

Smoke was great and the whistle steam really animated this locomotive, it was a nice touch - Thank you Lionel

Sounds were a bit "tinney" compared to die cast locomotives. But that is to be expected with the brass construction. I ran it one notch down  I like the whistle which is similar to the 3751/3759. Nice touch

I like the white markers and wow that headlight hurts the eyes!

So I know Lionel wanted feedback for this new Hybrid and I say I am in!  The details, matching a prototype as close as they can, and keeping them cost affordable is a big plus in my book.

Dave and Ryan GOOD JOB and let the New locomotive releases commence!

I will be waiting in line for the next one.

Here are some late night cell phone pics... sorry for the glare.

Just my opinion but, maybe we should wait awhile to see how well the new "hybrid" models hold up and performs in extensive running with fair sized freight trains, before rushing into the next version.

The foundation of the Hybrid concept being a proven drivetrain and chassis from a already produced diecast series.  I say they have already been proven for operation overtime.

Bring on more Hybrids, now!

Since Northerns, Mikados and Pacifics have been mentioned I would buy the following:
1. NP Class A3 (coal), SP&S Class E1 (oil) 4-8-4, especially SP&S #700

Already produced by Sunset/3rd Rail, some years ago. Watch eBay for them.

2. NP Class W3 2-8-2

Excellent choice. But probably Sunset/3rd Rail would be the only manufacturer to offer this.

3. GN Class H7 4-6-4

Never knew that the GN had any 4-6-4 locomotives.

(Some of the above have been done in brass but they are impossible to find, sell near MSRP and don't have modern sound systems.)

I am very happy with my ATSF Hybrid!!!  Lionel has taken their smoke output to the next level finally.  My AC9 and this Hybrid are the best smokers I have.  The detail is excellent.  The drive system is stout and of course Legacy offers the best operation!

The sound is is a bit of a let down.  It is a bit tinny or lacks bass.  I have to turn the volume pot down, because if it is turned up the speakers crackle, especially when the whistle is full blast.

I think it should have a bell chord, it has a whistle chord which I really like.  Speaking of the whistle.  I really like that the AC9 (so too does the 2-10-10-2) emits smoke directly from the whistle.  The Hybrid, like the majority of Legacy engines sends it out of a hole in the boiler.  That is a bit of a bummer, but to find fault with this great engine you really have to pick knits because overall it is impressive.

Next on my Hybrid wish list an ATSF 2-10-4 5000 series.  Lionel has the 2-10-4 chassis, so bring on Madame Queen!

That Kadee coupler upgrade looks great TT4T.

Has anyone popped the lid off of the tender to see how the speaker is packaged?  Maybe adding a fatboy with a housing baffle is the solution for the sound.

I am going to add a bell cord to mine. This would have been a GREAT candidate for the operating swinging bell.

I would really like to see a Northern Pacific Class A4 made...

I'd be on board too for a H10 mike but with the just released NYC light mikado, I wouldn't think this model would be in the cards.

That was the first thing that came to mind when Lionel announced the Santa Fe engine. Unlikely but that would be my preference. I'll see how the K5 project goes. I have to do some research to try and figure out what three rail chassis would be closest to the Sunset 2 rail engine. This would include MTH engines as well.

Already has been, by Sunset/3rd Rail. Both in 3-Rail and in 2-Rail, plus the other versions of the NP A Class Northerns (including the SP&S oil fired #700).

Edit: I have #2685, as I preferred the A-5 Class version.

Yes, but try to find them now, and to have them in 3rail with a Lionel Chassis and with Legacy would be ideal....

Well, to each his own but, I bet Lionel would price such a "rare" model well over $1700, which I would NOT consider "ideal"!

With regard to the 3222, should the sun shades or visors above the windows of the cab be a shade of tan?  I have seen photos of ATSF engines where they looked lighter than the rest of the cab.  Just curious.

thanks

Well, those were indeed canvas, so some sort of "tan" color would be appropriate. That said, remember that those canvas "sun shades" would have gotten pretty well faded by the sun, so even a lighter shad could be appropriate.

The detail of this engine looks awesome and I'm sure the Legacy sounds are equally awesome. I have been dreaming for years now that I would see a Milwaukee Road 2-6-6-2 Mallet offered. I know Lionel has a 2-6-6-2 chassis available as they have already made one. Soooooo, I have my fingers crossed that either 3RD Rail and/or now Lionel just might pull the cord and release one. I guy can hope right?

Hey J DADDY, great topic, and it’s a real beauty, a show stopper at York in April of 2017. I wonder if there will be another Brass/Hybrid Offerring this April. I have not ran mine much yet, however will tomorrow when several of my friends come to my home to tryout the new Shay, and the new CSXT NW2, and the TinPlate inspired S2 Set...Wow, these new trains are sure fun to run....AD47E8B3-A83C-4803-88A7-980944A78B3772924E50-D4D6-4909-9070-31653BEE1F3437BA6D8F-691C-4E74-AE7C-012B29660DEC6A3638C5-8277-469D-8BA1-BA1A68AB68DD98736BF3-B73E-4228-8053-9BEC55EECBB2
