MTH should have done individually powered E/F units from the beginning. The whole tether thing was a joke in terms of looks, reliability and getting power to run the motors in the second A unit with the slave board. When you stop and consider the cost of building the slave boards and the interconnect wiring in the A units and the B units, your probably not that much cheaper than just installing two DCS control boards. The $470 pricing is simply to make the pricing consistent across all premier products. Another annoying problem is that now I cannot buy a second B unit for my older PS3 set because the interconnect wiring needed to run my slave A unit does not exist in the new B units.

MTH wish list:

  1. Add smoke/sound to all units.
  2. Install the 3/2 rail trucks with all driven axles and flanged wheels on the outside.
  3. No more plastic wheels on $450 engines!!!

^^^

Engines with plastic wheels that I know of:

Premier EMD E8

Premier EMD DDA40X

Premier Alco PA

Premier UP Coal Turbine

A lot of the older 3 axle Premier diesels had plastic non powered wheels. The new Premier 3 axle diesels with the 3 rail/2 rail trucks have all driven axles with flanges on the outside wheels. The inner axle actually does not touch the rail if you look close enough at it.

On page 85 in the new catalog, look at the wheels under the Southern E8. The inner axles are not driven and are flangeless.

At first when I went through the catalog on line nothing really caught my eye however I just got back from York and had a hard copy and noticed the following:

20-91579 PRR N-6b Cabin Car w/ Signal Man - I already have one and I would have been sold if they added rail phone antenna.

20-91579 U S Army Extended Vision Caboose - for my military train.

20-94267 PRR R50B Express Reefer - have 2 already, looked for a third at York but only found the same numbers that I had.

it it does pay to have a hard copy of the catalog in hand.

As for contents, too bad the Premier Russian Decapod wasn't offered in Strasburg.  That would have went nice with the Strasburg coaches I have on order from the previous catalog.

I wasn't aware that the Strasburg Rail Road even had a "Russian Decapod".

True enough, but I think the only Strasburg engines out there in o gauge are the low end Lionel 0-8-0, and the MTH Premier 4-4-0 American.  I don't think Strasburg has those either, but I could of course be wrong.  Just seems to me that the MTH Rus Dec could potentially at least be closer to what Strasburg actually has.

I'm still miffed MTH has not included popular features (whistle steam)to their Premier steam program. Especially so since MSRP on most comparable small steam is equal that of Lionel.. I had been waiting on a DT&I Russian but will pass because for me whistle steam on any new expensive steamer I buy today is a priority one.

My order this catalog...the MR signal man caboose and a UP RPO baggage car.

I was at the MTH booth at York talking to one of their reps who was demonstrating the steam whistle on their new Big Boy. I asked when we could expect seeing steam whistles on all Priemier steam engines. He said the issue was room inside the boiler and where the whistle was located on the boiler. The BB was a good candidate for the steam whistle as it was located near the front near the smoke stack. If the whistle is in the rear of the boiler them the moter is in the way, if in the middle them the PS board is in the way. They were using a HO smoke unit in the BB so it sounds like don't hold your breath for the whisttl to show up in Atlantics, Pasifics, Berkshires etc.

Also one of my next Vision Line next products suggestions was a complete Strasburg train set with new tooling Decapod #90 and proper coaches open and closed, dining car etc. Based on this tread it would be a good idea.

3rd Rail imported a very nice 4-8-0 in a Strasburg version about 2 years ago. It is a great little piece.

Don't forget that Sunset/3rd Rail produced a BEAUTIFUL model of the Norfolk & Western Rwy. M class 4-8-0 locomotives, including the specific locomotive at Strasburg, i.e. #475.

Since I am in the fortuitous position of only wanting one O-gauge item to be built, was not expecting much if anything from this catalog.  Thanks to Mike Reagan with Lionel's help recently delivered the High-Nose GP-30's which satisfied my wants with the exception of a Norfolk and Western late (1950's) steam era Steele  cabin car.

But with that said, I would be in for the Southern #6900 E-8 if and only if they offer a contemporary version with ditch-lights.  Tooling is not a problem since they did already make the PRR Levin E-8"s.

And while on the subject the 2016 volume 1 catalog cover portrays the NCTM "Streamliner" Event in O-gauge art work.  So as such the Erie #833 E-8 and UP #949 E-8 both have ditch-lights and the UP #949 has only a single headlight as at the "Streamliner" Event.

The Wabash #1009 E-8 dose NOT have ditch-lights.

And here is the Pan Am and EMD F and FT units.
