Looked at the new 2013 MTH European models brochure online:

1.  The 'big' story =  German E94 electrics:

      - DB in green or turkisblau

      - OBB in green or orange

2.  SNCF 141P Mikado in various numbers, etc

No new rolling stock, and no mention of a 'start set', that I saw.

This is what an E94 looks like if you didn't know;  this is an Austrian one, taken in '64:

Austria013

Interesting that MTH, which until now has gone with either between-the-wars or modern models, is now going 'mainsteam' with 1950's- 1970's models.

Best regards, SZ

This is nice, but there's only one European model I'd have an interest in: the TGV Atlantique (orange and gray or silver and blue).

If MTH ever decided to do Japanese models, I want the D-62 (2-8-4) steam locomotive (JNR) and the 500 Series Shinkansen (West Japan Railway/JR West, Nozomi). The D-62 will be a very difficult project as JNR scrapped all of their D-62s, rather than keep one for a museum piece. (Then again, all of the Blue Comet steamers were scrapped and we have multiple versions of it available in the past 30 years.)

To reiterate, YES, I want TGVs and 500 Nozomis on the same rails as my Southern Railway and Union Pacific frieght!

I found it at one of the French forums, but upon further review find that I was directed to the Hermann site [ hermann-rail.ch ], and you can view it directly there.

Edited to add photos of a 141P;  perfectly at home on passenger services, taken at Montparnasse in '66.

Just looked up the catalog at Hermann. You have your choice of downloads with German or French text, no English. The artwork for the new locomotives is very basic - not much more than a colored outline. The French Mikado comes in green or black, with different signs according to which line it was assigned to. The German Crocodile comes in German and Austrian variations - the German in blue or medium green, the Austrian in dark green or orange (looks like red in the catalog, but the caption says orange). Both look like excellent additions to the line - I'd like to get a black Mikado and the Austrian Krok in green - but probably won't, unless I win the lottery.

No new rolling stock - a few new paint jobs for the prewar beer reefers, that's all on that side. Modern gondolas and tankers are the same as in the U.S. catalog, nothing new there.

I hadn't thought about that possibility, but it makes sense, especially if [ as an example ] Busch might be funding the Euro-UL approvals for the controls.  Maybe we'll see that 0-6-0T after all !

Did anyone else notice that MTH used outdated artwork [ = brown sleepers ] for the brown Orient add-on set ?

The more professionally done Busch/MTH catalog is now online...nothing different.

A good offering, a bit puzzled by not having at least 1 new freight car (better news from the Brawa side)..

Also interesting that Busch in their regular offering do not have any 0 scale items (except for a few cars in 1/43)..heck even Wiesmann has 1 page of all new 0 items.

The last few weeks have been insane catalog and new item wise (all Gauge)..best time of the year...

Yes -- and this one has pricing.  Interesting that the newest models have the same 'scale' and 'hi-rail' pricing.  The E94 is $899 either way, for example.

They still refer to the 2 rail track line as Code 128....

What is really interesting about MTH/2013 is what isn't in the catalogue;  no British, no new rolling stock except paint.  Maybe the long awaited 'start set' will be announced later in the year, to give competition less time to respond, and to 'compress the buzz'....

I believe Mike Wolf mentioned it last Spring at the TCA TOY TRAIN MUSEUM Meeting before York, it should be on Youtube under the TCANETVISION Channel..I also asked MTH Facebook about it..I`m suspecting it might be in the next MTH O Gauge Catalog..

There is a ready-to-run TGV available in 0-scale:

The Shinkansen 500 is also available, that would be approx 10meters long if you buy the complete train? Also it's a bit pricey

Of course the version of the E94 to buy is the blue one:

I also would have expected some different German coaches instead of all the French stuff.

No, the further they would have been seen in Switzerland would have been Basel for the German one and Buchs/SG for the Austrian one..both are border station were engine were switched to SBB-CFF-FFS one. And since they were in service till late 80's for DB or mid 90's for OBB that's fairly modern.

Dunno however if preserved engine do sometimes appearance on Swiss territory.

Yes, I agree with Lafondue [ Imagine that ! ];  incompatability of ATS systems and pantographs inhibited through running.  I think they might have appeared in Schaffhausen as well, though.  Most of their appearances in Basle on the SBB side were on transfer runs, and in the early '70's for example three were stationed on the DB side for that purpose.

"However":  From memory the SBB leased E94's on [ at least ] two occasions when they needed 'more power':

  - I think some were used on intra-SBB transfer runs [ eg, to the docks ] in the Basle area in the first instance.

  - In the second they were used on some heavy block trains of gravel.

In both cases SBB width pan shoes or pans had to be fitted.

Best regards, SZ

Edited to add:  In the border areas such as Basle catenary / clearances were arranged to permit inter-running with either style of pan.

According the the post earlier in that thread there were 8 E94's leased by the SBB in 1987 of which two were kept until 1988. Unfortunately the reference site is not available anymore.

Great find....yup can see they have been fitted with the SBB pantograph and as Steinzeit mentionned they were used for "Kieszug".

Well, I had a brainwave today so instead of searching for E94 I tried for 194 and then more photos turn up in the search:

these two both with a kieszug (the correct cars for that are available but probably only in brass). Also interesting that the SBB 194 only has one pantograph.

While there may be brass cars available, the most common in 0 scale are the ones Wemoba produced a number of years ago;  they are plastic [ though a train set of them would still be rather pricey, at least by my standards ] and were molded in the base color [ brown, green, yellow..] of the various private owners.  They are quite nice models.

For tinplaters I believe Zanka has them curently in production.  There was also a tinplate model made by one of the Swiss "post-Buco" manufacturers [ I've forgotten whom ], but it is seriously undersized.

The Wemoba would be the cars I meant but with those prices I just assumed they were brass   . Ebay shows 345 EUR per Wemoba car in completed auctions, maybe MTH will make them in the future. I already e-mailed MTH about some HBIS cars....
