A friend just bought a new MTH Premier PS2 Dreyfus. When he powers up, he says everything starts up, but the loco just sits there when he tries to move it forward. He thought the issue was in the controller, (an MTH Z1000), I think it's the PS2. We're in Australia, so sending back to the seller or MTH is not really an option. I thought I saw a thread on this recently, but can't find it. Is there a fix by doing a reset or something else, or is it just a dud PS2 board?

Have you tried reading the info on the command control or PS-2 & 3 sections?
Otherwise Barry B. might be able to help you.

Check the battery. Sounds like a classic battery issue to me. Either that or its locked in Neutral.
Yes, the battery, I'll ask him, it may be flat.
Dave;
I always charge at around 10 to 12 Volts for several hours before I try to do anything else with a PS2 engine. Rechargable Batteries go flat after a month or so in storage, depending on battery type.
I believe the Charging system in the engine needs several hours to bring it up to the point you can run.
Removed note about 9V, that is for the old PS-1s, oops.
It's the battery. He told me the loco was new, but it had been on the shop shelf for years. I'll send him a BCR. Thanks for all the advice.
If it is the PS-2 by MTH it uses a battery pack more like a portable phone, 3.2 volts or 5 volts, than the nine volt battery which was PS-1.
I went and bought a wall type charger for my PS-2 engines, the plug is underneath the engine, charge them for six or seven hours with a wall charger. Much safer with the wall charger then track charging as it can allow the engine to run away if the power drops out and comes back up. At least with the power company I have in Florida.

Lee,

Not exactly:
- PS1 engines use an 8.4 volt (9 volt form factor) rechargeable battery
- Early PS2 engines use an 8.4 volt (9 volt form factor) rechargeable battery
- Later PS2 engines use a 2.4 volt rechargeable battery
- PS3 engines do not use a battery at all.
