During his Demos With Dave video earlier this afternoon, Dave at Lionel announced a secret product that he and Dave will be discussing this Wednesday sometime. What could this mysterious product be? I'd like to hear from you guys here on the OGR Forum. Do you have any guesses as to what the new product could be? Let me know. I have a few ideas of my own.

Possibility #1: an all new locomotive tooling (very likely):

-I don't think it will be a Vision Line model. That probably won't be announced until the fall York Show.

-It could be a Brass Hybrid steam loco model. Here are some ideas:

-Early SP Cab Forward: 2-8-8-2, 2-6-6-2, and earlier 4-8-8-2 versions (Dave is an SP guy)

-Milwuakee Road F7 Hudson

-C&O Yellowbelly Hudson

-Other loco ideas:

-Siemens Charger (multiple versions)

-SD70ACe-T4

-ET44AC/ET44C4 (with correct truck details)

-GP60/GP60M/GP60B

-A new B40-8W tooling

-New SD90MAC-H (6000HP units; both Ph. 1 and Ph. 2 cab versions) toolings

-Possibility #2: New Operating Accessories:

-Scale Intermodal Crane with sound and Legacy control

-Command-Controlled classic Postwar accessories (164 Log Loader, Coal Loader, Bascule Bridge, etc.) with sounds

-Fastrack Turntable with TMCC and sounds from external shed

-Fastrack Roundhouse to go with the TT; also including background sounds and crew dialogue

-Fastrack Transfer Table with TMCC and sounds

-O84 and O96 FT Switches

-Possibility #3: A Physical Cab 3 Remote and Charger?:

I doubt this will happen at this time, but it could in the future.

I guess we'll have to wait a couple of days to see what Ryan and Dave have been working on. I bet it will be awesome, though.

"Dealers got the following message too from Lionel Sales:  'Just a little teaser that there is a new Lionel product offering coming your way on Wednesday 4/17. Be on the lookout for the email cause it will be 44 times better than you can imagine!"

So I assume whatever it is will have a connection with the number 44.

Yes Atlas got that tooling. With 3rd Rail doing the Chargers, that wouldn't make much sense for Lionel to do.

I honestly don’t believe it will be a GE 44 Ton. Why would Lionel promote a 44 Ton with a special live stream?  It doesn’t make sense. And the MTH/Atlas 44 is too good and reliable to put money into new tooling to compete.

While I appreciate 3rd Rail models, they can’t and don’t really compete with Lionel. People like the ERR boards, but their life is limited. Legacy is better. The cost of their models are also more expensive. Great quality, but more expensive. With that being said, I believe that there is a market for the Chargers. Lionel can produce more models with better sound at a lower cost.

My whole point is that there is a market for multiple makers of a modern loco. Don’t count the Chargers out yet.

We will all see tomorrow.

Apples and oranges.  3rd Rail / GGD makes scale models which are copiously researched, always have fixed pilots, have consistently outstanding fit and finish, and are first and foremost prototypically accurate.   With Lionel, you get what you get -- sometimes you get a very well executed N & W Class A, and sometimes you get the recent Legacy Dreyfus debacle.  I own plenty of both and these two companies cater to very different markets.

I understand that I may have sounded like I am anti-3rd Rail. In the contrary, I believe these are some of the most detailed locomotives on the market; and definitely in O-Scale.

I was trying, unsuccessfully, to state that there is a market for two manufacturers to make scale versions of the same engine. I believe that if that occurred - two manufacturers making the SC44 - Lionel may have some advantages with full Legacy control and a broader manufacturing ability.

With that being said, I am quite happy that Lionel is making the ET44. And I believe that recently, Lionel is putting a much more emphasis on individual, road specific, details. The presentation shows this was part of their focus on the new locomotive.

I don't think Lionel will make Chargers until they offer new passenger cars. Superliners are obvious but even the K-Line bombardier cars would work for some roads. It seems like a catalogue offering to me so they can bundle them together.

FWIW I have 3rd Rail and Legacy locos and they each have pros and cons. The one argument I don't really understand is price. The 3rd Rail Chargers are $799, the same price as the new ET44's. I can't imagine a Legacy Charger would be any cheaper.

I am really excited about the ET44 and plan on ordering the CN unit.

In the ET44 announcement video, Ryan and Dave said that sometime in May, they will announce yet another new locomotive. What could it be? Besides my previous ideas, I have quite a few more possibilities. As much as I want more modern diesel locomotives, I think that this next model will be a steam locomotive, most likely a Brass Hybrid model. Here are my other suggestions:

-Diesel Locomotives:

-SD75M in ATSF (Warbonnet livery) and BNSF (Warbonnet Patched ATSF and H3 Swoosh liveries)

-SD75I in CN (SD75ACC rebuild units too), BNSF Warbonnet, BNSF H3 Swoosh, and Ontario Northland liveries

-EMD GP50

-GE AC4400CW (including rebuild units)

-EMD GP39-2

-EMD GP40/GP40-2

-EMD SD45-2 (including ATSF Bicentennial versions and BNSF SD32ECO with correct 12-Cylinder 710 Prime Mover sounds)

-Brass Hybrid Steam Locos:

-ATSF 3450/3460-Class Hudsons, including the #3460 "Blue Goose" Hudson

-PRR T1 Duplex

-PRR Q1 or Q2 Duplex

-Some unique ideas; ie: rebuilt locomotives:

-BN rebuilt GP39E/M/V (formerly GP30 and GP35 units from GN, NP, and CB&Q); also BNSF GP39-3s in H4 Swoosh livery

-BN rebuilt GP28M (formerly GP7s/GP9s/GP18s)

-NS "Admiral Cab" SD40-2 Rebuild (also a GP38-2)

-CSX "Spongebob Cab" SD40-3 Rebuild (also GP40-3 and GP38-3)

-NS SD70ACC with correct cab tooling (including special liveries)

-NS/CP Rail SD70ACUs with correct cab tooling (including special liveries)

-UP SD59MX (rebuilt SD60M)

-Another cool idea:

-Legacy or LC+2.0 Phantom Locomotive with matching passenger and freight car sets

There are so many great locomotives on this list.

I would love to see good SD80/90 engines as well as rebuilds like the SD70ACUs. Of course with the correct cabs.

Now a couple of catalogs ago, they listed the SD50s, and in one of the YouTube catalog events, they mentioned that the new modular tooling for these will help them build future SD models. Maybe something from this tooling.

As far as steam, the N&W/Strasburg 475 is on my list. Great model and it would round out my Strasburg roster of steam.

And @Bill N, you make a good point. Though sometimes it’s fun to speculate and wish. Who knows what we might get.

i would hope for a newly tooled Phantom freight train but i won't hold my breath besides it will probably be out of my price range anyway. but if the phantom came back with freight cars and i got it- that would be it i would never need another train again. it would complete my roster if i got a new phantom and i would run it like crazy heck or another fantasy locomotive type would make me so happy. realistic engines are fine but if you really want to make me happy a sci fi style train with a wicked paint job would make my roster complete. hear my wish lionel PLEASE and with a super mysterious background story to go along with like you did with the phantom.

3rd Rail produces both 3 rail and 2 rail models.

LIONEL already produced an enormous amount of TMCC compatible 3 rail  locomotives.
