I have one of those new N/S Lionel ES44 Conrail engines that all of a sudden is acting up.

It moves along and then stops, with the cab light flashing on and off.

It looks like the rear truck is binding.  I did a cab1 engine reset (Hit O on remote), and it runs again but stops again and the cab light is flashing.

In the manual that comes with the engine, last page, it says it could be 'main drive motor stalled'

any suggestions?

time to contact Lionel.

Look in the gearing and see if anything is stuck in there (piece of ballast/scenery stuff, scotchbrite bits, etc). With the liondrive trucks, the gearing is freerunning, so you should be able to push it down the rails by hand.

Is it always stalling in the same spot? Check the voltage on the track. Legacy electronics limit the current to the motors. Low voltage and a heavy train will run up the current to the motors as the electronics respond to the speed control, and too much will trip the limiter to stop the engine.
